Dark Horse Becomes Apple Hot News

header1.gif

On the day that the Iphone stood still, thanks to overloaded servers created by high demand, here is a story featuring Apple that has a much more positive spin.

Today Apple released a Pro Profile on Dark Horse Comics. A sales tool for the Apple brand the feature does a great job explaining how said brand helps the Dark Horse staff put comics to bed every month.

For those of you, like myself, who are waiting for your Iphone to return from the land of 'brick' give this piece a read. It might help bring your blood pressure down at least a little bit because every comic fan can admire someone highlighting the medium they love.

Entertainment Weekly X-Files Comic Preview

xfiles.gif

This weeks Entertainment Weekly exclusive takes a peek at The X-files book that DC Wildstorm is releasing July 23rd.

According to the EW coverage the story won't tie into the film. It instead sits firmly in season five X-files mythos, considered by many X-fans as the best season of the bunch.

It's good to see Mulder and Scully turning up somewhere. Maybe it's the fact that I love my Tivo and never watch commercials or maybe the X-Studio is avoiding the buying of advertising until after Batman opens but it has seemed that there has been little push for the series return to the big screen.

Superhero Movie Without A Comic Book But With Some Issues

hancock-1.gif

Hancock opened this past weekend at number one with over a 60 million dollar box office. A superhero movie not based on a comic book it seems the first time, in recent years, that the Hollywood movie studios have tried to jump on a money making bandwagon without the aid of comic book source material.

For fans of comic books this certainly felt like an interesting discussion for our readers to have but in the midst of putting this piece together I discovered a second element that is much more interesting for PK readers to discuss.

It seems there is a moment in the film where Will Smith's character is faced with wardrobe choices. His character's response has raised some eyebrows at GLAAD.

Considering recent conversations here regarding inclusion in comics, as well as the film's target audience, what are your thoughts on the debate?

For those of you who saw the film what was your reaction to the moment in question?

Does it help point out how obnoxious Hancock is at the start of the film? Or were you offended by the response?

Hellboy's Coming

hellboy2post.gif

Before Guillermo del Toro found himself nominated for an Oscar there was Hellboy. The 2004 comic book adaption did decent enough box office to garner a sequel. Four years, and quite a few interesting film trailers, later the tale continues.

Opening Friday it seems to hold all the promise that the comic holds dear - action and adventure that brings dry wit in spades.

So - do we have any Hellboy lovers in our midst? Any haters? Discuss!

A Question About The Question

11_28previews_25.gif

A very interesting fan site for The Question has turned up. Filled with everything from fan art to essays, it covers the early creation of the character all the way to the current incarnation - Renee Montoya.

One such essay on the site - The Question of Gender and Sexuality - is well worth the visit and I am sure might result in some interesting thoughts from readers of Pink Kryptonite.

Normally, I wait til the comments section to add my two cents but is there any doubt whether faceless or wearing what might be considered traditional male clothing that The Question is a woman? I can't remember a single time that I have seen art of Montoya, in her new role as superhero, in which there hasn't been something that speaks to her being female.

Those are my two cents... what are yours?

Alan Cumming Honored In NYC

art.trevor.project.gif

Alan Cumming, known to comic book fans as the X-men film incarnation of Nightcrawler, was honored Monday night in New York by The Trevor Project. The first national, 24-hour, 7-day a week toll free crisis and suicide prevention helpline for gay and questioning youth, the Trevor Project is doing it's part to help young people understand that they aren't alone.

Having been in the room Monday night when Alan received the award I can say that he is an advocate who doesn't just give lip service to his thoughts on being out and proud. He spoke eloquently of the importance of the community stepping up and helping gay youth know they aren't alone - at one point saying it is why he has "absolutely no shame" in being himself.

The clip package honoring his life in film included a section on his decision to do X2. He spoke of how he felt the message of the film, especially the mutant "coming out" scene, was such an important one.

Considering the statistics on suicide in this country, what Alan stands for is incredibly important. I was shocked to learn that suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 16 to 24 and that gay youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

Listening Monday night to Alan and the rest of the speakers I was reminded of the recent discussions here about our desire for a stronger commitment to LGBT representation in comics from the big two. I can only imagine how many young people who love comics find comfort in the fact that they have something in common with a certain Young Avengers or Runaways character.

CNN has some coverage of Alan's career, political ideas, and the Trevor Project.

Wanted On The Big Screen

wanted_5_1024.gif

It opens Friday.

It stars two of the most talented actors around - one of whom most people (male or female, gay or straight) find very desirable. No, silly, not Morgan Freeman.

It is based on a comic.

That should make it a big deal for comic fans... right?

Well... as the film went through development the team behind it slowly chipped away at many of the plot points of the book that made it so compelling when it was published in 2003.

Should Wanted be considered another of the comic book adapted success stories of 2008 or simply be considered under summer action film?

And considering the box office disappointments of poorly adapted projects such as Catwoman I wonder - Why does Hollywood insist on spending money on something they consider new and different only to completely re-invent the elements that make it so?

Your thoughts?

Runaways Restart Has A Cover

runawyv01cov_l.gif

As Whedon's tenure on Runaways draws to a close art has appeared online for the forthcoming issue #1 written by Terry Moore. As drawn by Humberto Ramos, who is best known for his work on The Spectacular Spider-Man, the team of teenage rebels certainly has an all new look.

Thoughts?

Is Your Relationship Comic Book Friendly?

love.gif

So this afternoon while I was pulling into my local comic shop a text came into my phone. It wasn't some important tidbit of information but instead a forward; one of those cheery ones that makes my eyes roll. The text read:

Love isn't finding someone you can live with; it's finding someone you can't live without. Send it to 5 people and you will find true love.

Thankfully I have an unlimited text plan or someone would have gotten their butt kicked.

What does this have to do with comics?

As I entered the store I came face to face with a couple in their 30's who were picking up their weekly titles. One of them was pouring over the new Secret Invasion and the other was checking out Wonder Woman.

This, combined with the text message, got me thinking about our faithful PK readers.

Do you and your significant other share the comic book love? If not, have you had any interesting exchanges about your love of all things graphic novel?

Come and tell us how love and comic books mix in your universe.

Soap Star Stealing Souls

soulstealer_coverart.gif

It's not every day that you hear about a soap actor creating a graphic novel so when I read this piece over at TVGuide.com I thought it was worth bringing on over.

The cover is certainly beautiful and the concept seems intriguing. As someone who from time to time has been known to tune into some of the ABC soaps Easton is certainly a talented guy before the camera. I, for one, will be curious to see him step out of the arena he is known in.

Gay Days Orlando

gay-days2.gif

Please forgive me the momentary unrelated comic moment. I just returned from Orlando Gay Days. For those of you who don't know of Gay Days here is what their official site says about the event.

"Gay Days began in 1991 as a single designated day (always the first Saturday in June) when the community and friends were encouraged to "Wear Red and Be Seen" while visiting the world's most popular theme park."
