New Comic Wednesday - 02/17/10

ncw021710.JPG

We've got the end of a Republic, a space bug versus an old ghost, a multi-limbed assassin, and doomed team-ups hitting comic stores today.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic #50
The final issue! The saga of Zayne Carrick -- the Padawan-turned-undercover-and-unexpected-hero -- ends in this last issue of the series that has been a part of the Dark Horse Star Wars line since 2006! Zayne and the Mandalorian Rohlan rush to aid their friend Jarael against the demented scientist Demagol and the vicious slaver Chantique. If they can arrive in time, there is a chance that everything will turn out in their favor-but with Zayne's ever-awkward connection to the Force, nothing is certain.

Green Lantern #51
The most epic battle in BLACKEST NIGHT yet comes to a shocking conclusion as Hal Jordan makes the ultimate move to take on the Black Lantern Spectre. But what price comes with the unleashing of Parallax? And what does this mean for the future of the emotional spectrum's avatars?

Chase Variant One-Shot (Is All I Need) (One-Shot)
Comics industry gossip columnist, Doctor Who writer and creator of Watchmensch, RICH JOHNSTON joins with 2000AD's BAGWELL and Heavy Metal's SAVERIO TENUTA for a very different kind of comic. A balls-to-the-wall blockbuster action comic starring the four-armed genetically altered assassin, Chase Variant, as she tries to fulfill her missions while stopping rival governments from trying to collect her for themeselves. But all the time her every action is predicted by a very familiar card game being played by unknown assailants, challenging Chase's belief in self-determinism. This is Michael Bay meets Rene Descartes, TOMB RAIDER meets ANNIE HALL.

Doomwar #1
Wakanda has been conquered, its Vibranium reserves plundered -- and Storm faces execution in the next 48 hours. Dr. Doom stands triumphant. It will take the combined forces of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and the two Black Panthers to stand against him. A war has begun that will pit the world's most relentless super-villain against a collection of the world's most powerful super heroes -- one that will span the globe, offering twists and turns and surprise players (hello, Deadpool!) that neither side will see coming.

Here's a look at what hit comic shops today!

Mass Effect: Redemption #1
Mass Effect 2 lead writer Mac Walters reveals an essential moment in the life of Commander Shepard, the galaxy's greatest hero, only in Mass Effect: Redemption! The eagerly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster science-fiction epic that IGN.com named the #1 Xbox 360 game of all time, Mass Effect 2 begins with the disappearance of Commander Shepard. The story of what happens next --exclusive to this comic series -- will have the commander's companion Dr. Liara T'Soni undertake a deadly mission of extraordinary importance in the Milky Way's lawless Terminus Systems.

Suicide Squad #67 (Blackest Night)
Original Suicide Squad writer John Ostrander and Gail Simone resurrect The Suicide Squad as they take on Blackest Night and the Secret Six! The Fiddler has risen from the dead, and he's targeting Deadshot and anyone who stands in his way. But someone else has targeted Deadshot -- the Suicide Squad! Everything is about to hit the Wall (Amanda Waller, that is) -- and this Wall hits back! Continuing this month's one-issue revival of classic DC Universe titles, this epic story carries into January's Secret Six #17!

Siege #1
M, Civil War, and Secret Invasion, culminating with the evil Reign of Norman Osborn, the Marvel Universe has been left with its greatest villains holding more power and control than ever before. On the brink of madness, Osborn, in his final bid to take total control, targets the final obstacle in his mission...Asgard. Events are set in motion forcing our heroes to put aside the deep rifts that have grown over the past seven years. Opposing them stand a horde of evil that has begun to take down the gods of the Golden Realm! Siege will rock the foundations of every super hero, villain, and team in the Marvel Universe. As an era ends, one word will ring above all others.

Starcraft: Ghost Academy Vol 1 GN
Ghost Academy chronicles the early years of six StarCraft characters all destined for greatness-and tragedy. Five teenaged fourth-class Terrans (Nova, Tosh, Aal, Kath, and Lio) are rough-around-the-edges Ghost cadets in training -- and they are forced to deal with everyday teen issues such as crushes, physical and emotional pain, addiction to drugs, and their own budding telepathic abilities.

New Comic 'Wednesday' - 11/10/09

nct121009.jpg

Alright, alright, technically it's Thursday, but sometimes you have one of those weeks, ya know? Here's some highlights of what is in stores this week if you too haven't had a chance to get to your local comic shop.

B.P.R.D.: War On Frogs #4
Johann Kraus, the ectoplasmic man, leads a team of B.P.R.D. agents against the frog monsters as they spread across the country.

But this time, burning the nest of frogs is not the end of the battle for Johann, as he learns about the horrifying afterlife of the Bureau's sworn enemies. Peter Snejbjerg (Starman, The Books of Magic) tackles the final issue in the B.P.R.D.: War on Frogs series with series writer John Arcudi.

Daytripper #1
With Daytripper, Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá follow in the tradition of Craig Thompson, Paul Pope and David Mazzucchelli -- cartoonists at the top of their game making comics about the quiet moments that ask big questions. Brás de Oliva Domingos is an obituary writer with a famous father, a career he hates, and tons of questions. How does a person become a successful writer? How does a man get out of his father's shadow? But those concerns will dwarf the surprise he'll find in the first issue -- a twist both he and readers will never see coming, which will grow into a mystery about the meaning of life itself.

God Complex #1
The co-creator of Powers and Mice Templar, Michael Avon Oeming brings you magic, monsters and GODS. Meet Paul, he's an everyday kind of guy. He's kinda tall, kinda strong and kinda not mortal at all. Paul is actually Apollo (no,really) in hiding... from his family... the ancient Greek gods. Paul's father (you know, Zeus) would rather see Paul dead than living as a mortal. So, for Paul, being a god is complex, and dangerous.

X Necrosha: The Gathering
Selene's Inner Circle stand revealed... Wither, Mortis, Senyaka, Eli Bard and Blink. But what led Selene to gather some of the deadliest mutants in the world? Why would one of the X-Men's students join her? Who is Mortis? How is Blink alive?

The stories of the Black Queen's death dealers are told in this anthology one-shot by some of today's hottest artists!

Comic of the Week

Review: Wonder Woman #1 - #5 OK, so a couple of unkind reviews from me of late. Does that mean I hate the whole New 52? No, not at all. Does it mean that I only enjoy the new characters? Definitely not. Case in point: Wonder Woman is one of my favorite books of the relaunch. I think it's very good, with strong writing, an excellent ambience and fantastic art. Read on for why this reboot is the first time I've ever subscribed to Wonder Woman!...
