These are, admittedly, not amazing photos. However, seeing as how they were shot on the sly at a restricted press event (probably with a camera phone or something), they aren't too bad. The pictures were captured at New York's recent Toy Fair, and they reveal a very different look for Harvey Dent in his villainous persona than has been presented before.
One of the big differences is the fact that Two Face is no longer wearing a divided suit, and is instead sporting a regular one which you could grab at just about any Men's Warehouse. However, the suit is instead split into a beat-up/pristine half, which you can see in the larger photos over at Dark Horizons. What DH pointed out, though, is probably the most noteworthy:
The facial scarring does not fully encompass half his head rather about a third of it and is dark purple in color. One eye looks notably red and the surrounding socket damaged (the most likely use for the CG will be here).
I'm curious to see how close to the film version this figure is, but if it's anything like how Aaron Eckart is going to look, I'm really excited.
I've mentioned before about how I'm simultaneously excited and nervous about the upcoming Incredible Hulk movie due out this summer. For those of you who haven't read this, here's the recap: I'm excited because of the all-star cast involved, but I'm a little skittish because there really hasn't been much promotion for the flick so far (which might mean the studios don't think it'll do well and aren't wasting money advertising it). However, it seems that the pimping of said film is set to begin soon, according to Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel:
"We are very excited about our two upcoming 2008 film releases, 'Iron Man' on May 2nd and 'The Incredible Hulk' on June 13th. Both of these films are in post production and we are preparing now for the major marketing efforts that will be upcoming," Maisel told investors.
"We are extremely excited about the response so far to the Iron Man teaser trailer and the Iron Man Super Bowl spot and can’t wait for the new 'Iron Man' trailer and the first 'Incredible Hulk' teaser trailer to start hitting theaters in early March."
All I can say is that it's about damn time. Here's hoping it's as good as the Iron Man teasers.
If you never read the Image miniseries Alternation, well, you didn't really miss much unless you're a fan of nifty artwork. But, really, the writing was pretty much drek. However, I recently picked up the series in order to find some steampunk art references, and I was entertained by some of the things I found within it. While the overall concept -America is invaded by Germany during the Civil War and a group of freedom fighters led by Sam Clemens now fights against the Evil Empire which arose- was certainly intriguing, I found the Automat Tin Men to be even more interesting. The A.T.M. is pictured at the top, and I thought it looked more than a little like the Big Daddy characters from Bioshock.
While the final renderings are a bit different in terms of being a lot bigger and less organic looking, the sketches I found in the back of Alternation #2 were a lot closer to what our favorite guardians of the Little Sisters ended up looking like. I'm sure it's just one of those strange coincidences, but it sure is a weird one... especially since the comic was published back when Bioshock had just started to make its way into the public's awareness.
Hit the jump to see the A.T.M. sketches and their official description.
I'm not a huge anime fan, so I'm a little biased against the upcoming Gotham Knight already. I also didn't like The Animatrix, which is what Gotham Knight is a lot like in terms of content (six animated shorts with different writers and animators for each)... however, I'm probably going to check it out anyway since Bruce Timm is actually directing all the segments and I tend to eat up anything that man's involved with.
Over at io9, there's a video teaser showcasing a lot of footage -as well as a lot of really dull interviews- with people involved in the project. However, based on what they've got showcased, this looks like a DVD which will be in the JLA: The New Frontier realm of quality as opposed to that wretched Superman: Braniac Attacks.
Do you like comics to a point where others think you're obsessive? When someone asks you about what works of art have influenced your development, do you cite comics like The Dark Knight Returns and Sandman? Have you been able to spot Stan Lee in every one of his Marvel Movies cameos? If so, then it sounds like you're the perfect candidate to come and write for us!
We here at Pink Kryptonite are looking to expand our cast of newshounds and literate fanboys, and we're hoping to expand our ranks from within our community. If you're interested, please send in 2-3 writing samples, with at least one showing how you would write a comic news story. The rest of your samples can include anything you think might give us a better sense of your literary style, the more interesting the better! We're taking applications all week, but the sooner you apply, the sooner we can add to our ever-growing army!
What do you do when you're a best-selling rock band who just happens to be composed of a bunch of comic nerds? Well, if K.I.S.S. is any example, you get yourselves immortalized in comic form (after sleeping with tons of beautiful women, appearing in lord knows how many films, and terrifying conservative parents everywhere, of course). Fall Out Boy, deciding to follow suit, is joining forces with Dabel Brothers Productions -famous for their comic adaptations of Anita Blake and The Wheel of Time- to publish Infinity On High later this year:
The finished project will consist of many stories told over the course of two, perfect bound 56-64 page issues due to hit stores in the third of fourth quarter of this year. As for art, Young says that a collection of artists will be pitching in, most notably, Dan Fraga.
So, as near I can tell, this is going to be a rock & roll version of Flight which is going to feature some art by Dan Fraga. Sounds cool, but I'm wondering who's going to write the stories...
So... let's be honest about something, shall we? The last X-Men movie was awful. Well, I say awful, but I just mean awful in comparison to the flicks that were helmed by Brian Singer instead of Brett "No Character Development" Ratner. Needless to say, I wasn't particularly thrilled when i heard the announcement about how the studios were getting set on developing a Wolverine-only film shortly after The Last Stand's commercial success.
But, time's rolled forward, and details about the movie are starting to roll out, regardless of the sound and fury many comics fans were raising. The above photo was released to go in a USA Today article about the film, and some vague plot details were revealed for their readers:
Jackman is tight-lipped on plot details, though he says the film will hardly be a one-mutant story.
Wolverine's nemesis Sabretooth "is going to play a big part in it. And there will be a good bit of cameos" of new and familiar mutants, he says. "But you can't give too much away, because fans are pretty hard-core. Their expectations go up a level every time you come out with a new film."
Well, I suppose this could be interesting, provided that Sabretooth is actually developed into an interesting character instead of being used as a barely-coherent thug (don't get me wrong, I liked how he was played in the first X-Men movie, but such characters don't work well as major antagonists for heroes). Oooh... maybe we could revisit that plotline from the early 90s where he thought he was actually Wolverine's father? Oh, and could we work Albert and Elsie-Dee in, too? They were totally cool!
I'm a huge fan of the Runaways comic series, partially due to the unique art style the first two seasons demonstrated, and also for the fantastic way it portrayed a group of teenaged superheroes as flawed but (very) human characters. They're all unique, they're all interesting, and they're all entertaining in their own individual ways.
Now, of course, the series is being written by one of the best writers of teenaged heroes, Joss Whedon, and it's only getting better. Even better? There's a preview of issue #29 online over at Comic Book Resources:
THE STORY:
“DEAD END KIDS”
The Runaways find themselves in the middle of a super-powered gang war in 1907! To make matters worse, two figures from the Runaways’ past show their faces. Mr. and Mrs. Yorkes don’t believe that the Runaways played such an innocent role in their daughter’s death.
Well? What're you waiting for? Head on over and check it out!
I am, sadly, a sucker for almost anything even remotely associated with Mike Mignola's good name? How much of a sucker? Well, I still own my copy of the collector's edition of Atlantis: The Lost Empire, so I'm pretty sure that puts me close to the status of "neurotic fanboy". Naturally, I fell in love with the above photo as soon as I saw it in the email Dark Horse had sent.
Aside from these lovely statues, they've also announced a lovely coffee mug with a brand new Mignola design!
Hit the jump for the press release and mock-ups of the mug.
I've been a little surprised at just how little news has come out regarding the upcoming film The Incredible Hulk, especially seeing as how closely it's following Iron man in terms of release dates. However, someone got to finally see some footage of the upcoming Edward Norton vehicle while checking out Toy Fair over in Germany, and they snuck a quick word out to all of us here in the States to give us an impression of the footage on display:
It was great to see the first footage of the INCREDIBLE HULK. I think the
Ang Lee movie was terrible, but I have a lot of faith in this one. What we
saw looked like the first official trailer. The scene opens with Edward
Norton meditating. We see images of a lab, experiments, Banner escaping from
the (Russian?) military (led by William Hurt and Tim Roth), running in the
streets, kissing Liv Tyler, guns, shooting, more running… The ‘trailer’ ends
with Abomination walking towards Hulk. Remember the end of Rocky III? Apollo
Creed wants to hit Rocky in their friendly duel? That’s exactly the way the
trailer ends. Abomination wants to hit Hulk. Hulk wants to hit Abomination,
but before it actually happens the trailer is over. Abomination looks like a
Hulk with the Voldemort face from the first Harry Potter movie.
...
I thought the shown footage was awesome. It promises much more action than
the Ang Lee movie, a great love story and an even greater fight.
Well, that definitely sounds cool. There's also some leaked info regarding new footage on display from Iron Man, which also sounds pretty good... but I'm really excited to hear that someone's finally doing The Hulk some celluloid justice.
Normally, I hate parody movies. It's not that I don't like the parodies themselves... it's just that the movies tend to suck in general. Meet The Spartans? Yeah, that was awful. Date Movie? My date and I walked out within a half hour. Epic Movie? Never even bothered. But Scary Movie and The Naked Gun? I'll admit to enjoying those flicks. And, seriously? Leslie Nielson? I do adore that man.
So, anyway, I'm not sure if this will actually be any good, but it certainly looks a lot more promising than a lot of the parody movies I've seen hitting the box office over the past couple of years.
Yes, boys and girls, it's that time of the week, again, which means that it is our duty to bring you a list of everything which is hitting shelves this week. For me, it was a light week: I walked out of my store with a couple of back issues I'd been looking for, as well as new copies of The Goon, The Red Star, American Virgin, and Brit. What about you? What're you buying this week?
