Stocking Stuffer: Return of the Dapper Men

Looking for something beautiful, well-written and slightly ominous in ambience to give to that very special someone? Look no further than Jim McCann's and Janet Lee's Return of the Dapper Men. It was reviewed in advance here by Rubber Justice and is an all-ages book that confounds the casual approach an adult might adopt by challenging them with a complex world, fluid illustrations and especially with faces that manage to be simply drawn but convey sophisticated emotion. As with the finest of fairy tales, the story itself is clever, fascinating and very well told and the narrative is flawlessly swaddled in a kind of cotton-candy fog of ominous confusion and indifference to the pressing concerns of its protagonists. Every turn of the page surprises me and makes me wonder at how lucky we are, as consumers of graphic fiction, to get to experience works like this. A book like this requires creators as talented and accomplished as McCann and Lee and they really do make it soar. The art unfolds with a breathtaking success that requires someone as creative and unfettered by convention as Janet Lee. The two of them, together, make real magic happen.
I've been reading my copy slowly, a few pages at the time, at night when my partner and I go to bed. Rubber Justice advised me to read it with a warm body close at hand and he is absolutely right. It makes one want to burrow under the covers, to feel loved, to dream deep.
Inappropriate bonus point: Jim McCann is totally hot.

I could not comment on the original article (Field Report: Dragon*Con 2010; http://www.pinkkryptonite.com/2010/09/field_report_dragoncon_2010.html) but I wanted to share with you the two pictures I took at the DragonCon 2010 Rainbow Flag Party.
"A just absurdly hot guy in a devil costume: red body paint and extremely well-done ears and accoutrement that really knocked my socks off."

Thank you SO MUCH for posting these! Was that not a great party? For one thing, it had a smoking hot devil, as you have proven; for another, it was packed and really fun, as you have proven. You've got great pictures in that set; Guinan is a particular fave.
You are quite welcome. Yes, the Rainbow Flag Party was the best party going that night. After a few drinks, we decided to check out the other parties in the Sheraton and ended up coming back immediately. After it was over (far too early), I ended up finding the all night rave with DJ Nemesis. From what I can remember, that was pretty awesome, too. Unfortunately, I never saw Aurora Silverlight the Devil again! I'm really glad the picture of him came out.
Wait, wait, wait - all night rave? Where was that? I had to drive back the next afternoon so I was trying (and failing) to get to bed relatively early compared to the options available but I never heard about an all night rave. I want the deets so I can try to find it next year. ;)
(If it's not public, but I can pry it out of you, feel free to use the email link in the left-hand side bar to drop me a line.)
It was the Dragon*Dance with DJ Nemesis at the Marriott Atrium Ballroom, which started at 0230 in the morning Sunday and ran to dawn.
When I came across it, the party was in full swing so I was not close to the stage. Regardless, I enjoyed the electronic music, danced and had quite a bit of fun watching a hottie next to me dance with light sticks.
The next morning/afternoon, I tried to piece the night together using my pictures and tweets. It took me a week to figure out THIS was the party I had fun at after the Rainbow Flag Party.
There are several videos from the party if you search YouTube for "DJ Nemesis DragonCon 2010."
Awesome - thank you!
