Links Abound: Makeovers On the Comics Internet
Deconstructive Comics were so eighties. Repurposed Comics are what's in right now. As Grant Morrison's been proving, the best recent comics have been the ones that don't get bogged down by continuity and precedence but use it as a momentous weight to keep things moving (Morrison mentioned here because his work on Batman is the most prominent example, though he's certainly not the exclusive user of this methodology). Reimagining heroes without the need for some hamfisted retcon or alternate universe classification helps keeps comics fun. With that in mind, here's a few links that look to revive comics from nearly every creative aspect of the medium, sites that beg me to get on my knees and draw the night away, that can compel someone to simply, purely, create.
Project: Rooftop is dedicated to character design and challenges creators to reimagine classic costumes and character sketches. Be sure to check out the P:R Invitational, a multi-artist recreation of JLA
ComicTwart is of the same vein, using noted comic illustrators to contribute to a weekly challenge. It's amazing to see how many variations can exist on "Minimalist Batman", and this Popeye tribute is nothing short of elegant.
Repaneled allows the common fan a chance to reimagine panels, classic or reviled, on their own terms, often in a modernist take. Suppose, for a second, Herge wasn't all about ligne claire?
And for the writers, there's thoughtballoons, which applies ComicTwart's prompts and instead begs for a page of script. The more Strip-Poker we get, the more I want to see a fully realized, collected edition of these one pagers. (Less for the stripping and more for the clever-done-in-one format)

I really, really, really enjoyed scrolling around in all of those. The minimalist stuff on ComicTwart was amazing. Minimalist Wolverine might have been my favorite; hard to say. Thank you so much for telling us about them!
Hey,
Thanks for the thoughtballoons link.
I also think a collection of the pages would be really cool, but doubt all the legal tape and paperwork could ever be done. But it's still a cool thought.
Thanks again, and hope you continue to enjoy the site. This week is Rick Grimes week. Enjoy.
