Uhh... Here's Your Captain America?

werdr.jpg

You've likely heard it by now, but most sources seem convinced that Captain America has been cast for his First Avenger movie, and it's not the Scott Porter you wanted, or anyone else from that first PR batch for that matter. It's Chris Evans.

Yet while some fans have voiced their trepidations about his performance in the Fantastic Four films, others have turned to the mysterious fact that neither Evans' publicist nor Marvel have confirmed him for the role. "Sources close to the company " claim that the terms of the deal need to be refined, but this expectant fan wonders if this cautious secrecy might be a sign of unannounced conflicts within the pre-production process. Reports earlier this month had seemingly guaranteed John Krasinski's involvement, only to be redacted a day later. Star writer Ed Brubaker, who has no involvement with the upcoming film, wrote

If Chris Evans actually has the role, I'm good with that. He was easily the best thing in the FF movies and he's been amazing in some others

But then there's the case of Stan Lee, who will have a signature Marvel cameo in the film. He tweeted

Your Generalissimo has faith in the judgment of the Marvel biggies. They've got a pretty good track record, wouldn'tja say?

Lee's expected enthusiasm aside, the various conflicting reports leave me wondering if there isn't trouble with America, especially since Evans, who is already scheduled to appear in the adaptions of Scott Pilgrim and The Losers, is a fairly bankable star that'll have to sign a contract for a rumored nine films as the Avengers movie gets assembled.

I am way, way more attracted to him than I had expected to be, as long as I try not to remember his participation Fantastic Four. I have no problem with seeing him as Cap.

That said, nine?!

Like everything else, that number is a rumor mill estimate, most of which would be small cameos. Let him have that screentime and more, I say.

I'm still optimistic about Evans playing Cap, but a friend of mine brought something rather jarring to my attention that makes me kind of backpedal.

Cap is one of the few mortals who can lift Mjolnir. He's fought in wars, both public and secret, stared death in the face a billion times, and can pull off wings on the sides of his helmet. He leads the Avengers from the front with a deep, soul-stirring "AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!" and never backs down from any challenge, even when that challenge is turning his back on his country because they're doing wrong.

Is that really Chris Evans?

Chris Evans is about the hottest person that ever existed.

Klarion said:

@TFT: Reasonable, but I suspect this will be an origins story showing a Captain America to which those things haven't happened.

@Klarion Like I said, I'm still optimistic, but it just gave me pause for thought.

I honestly can't wait to see him in tight blue chainmail. =D

I have no problem with Chris getting this. Hopefully he can pull it off, and hopefully he has dropped his whole "will not appear shirtless in movies" thing.

I have a feeling though that we will be getting more of an Ultimate Cap rather than the normal All American, Apple Pie Cap. It'll be interesting seeing him trying to give orders to a Robert Downey- Iron Man in the field of battle.

We'll see!

TheFilmTwit said:

@Kwan Oh, because that's what we need. Another douchebag "I'm a soldier" character. Ultimate Cap is probably the worst thing the Ultimate universe ever did, and that's saying something coming from me.

"But Film Twit, you towering hulk of manliness," you may be saying, "him just being a gruff, coarse, asshole soldier makes it more REAL."

Maybe for some people that's a draw, but when you deal with absolute assholes day in and day out, maybe I just want to read about a guy who's a goddamn hero.

Cap is supposed to be a symbol, a beacon for how things should be. I realize that the whole "we'll put a boot in your ass/ it's the American Way" thing gets a lot of play in a lot of places, but since when has that EVER been the point of a boy-scout force for good like Cap? I don't want to idolize Ultimate Cap. I want to kick his teeth in for being a dickhole.

I have only one problem with the FF movies: the producer. You have to view the special features on the FF2 DVD to really get this... the producer obviously just wanted to crank the thing out of the grinder. Shameful. I hear that they are doing a "reboot" of the FF series, and I didn't have a single problem with any of the cast AT ALL... but the producer clearly dumbed it wayyy down and rushed it out.

Chris Evans is HAWWWT. Hot. Hot hot heat. Julian McMahon was fine as Dr. Doom, but electrical powers an no full body robot armor is NOT Dr. Doom.

I would rather see Mr. Evans reprise his role as Johnny Storm and carry on with FF movies under another producer and cast someone else for Cap.

Cap needs to be that super muscular square-jaw type (not that Mr. Evans isn't- or can't-be- that, but Cap is more of a 'caricature' of super heroes than Mr. Evans evokes.

TheFilmTwit said:

@Lorax I agree with all of your points except Julian McMahon as Doom. The biggest problem with Doom in the FF movies was that he was FAR too subtle. Doom needs to be big and bombastic and overdramatic, it's the only way his character works. Doctor Doom never stepped out of the Silver Age and he's still a phenomenal villain because of it, not because he's a moustache twirler, but because when he says he's got a machine that can blow up the planet, you believe him.

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
