Young & Old Avengers Get Some Love In SEIGE

Tres Amigos

Brian Michael Bendis, the writer of Marvel's Avengers, New Avengers and countless other of their titles, is revisiting that classic team of heroes with a one-shot in December and a four-issue (plus many tie-ins) mini-series called SIEGE starting in January. Thus far Bendis hasn't been willing to spill very much but this week he's discussed that SIEGE will close out the Dark Reign storyline and will see the most iconic version of the Avengers reassembled as Captain America, Iron Man and Thor work together to take on Norman Osborn.

The most exciting part of this to me, personally, is that Bendis confirms that this will include the Young Avengers:

"[SIEGE] is an Avengers story but the nature of Dark Reign and the Avengers books and how they have been in the past few years makes it a Marvel Universe story. This is Avengers-focused but also involves the Young Avengers, the Secret Warriors-it's a big pile. Nick Fury is there front and center. But I think the real show stopper is the chance to see Thor, Iron Man and Captain America fighting alongside together."

And just in time for the series of Marvel movies that lead naturally towards an Avengers film, of course.

Since it will include the Young Avengers I have to hope/assume that it will allow some face time with everyone's favorite opposites-attract gay teen male superhero couple, Wicca and Hulkling. Those two, on their own, are enough to make me wish there were a regular Young Avengers book again. Le sigh.

I'm assuming this is the 2010 thing that was mentioned previously for the YAs.
I too hope this'll lead in to them getting a new book.
And frankly (and I know people will disagree), I don't want Heinberg on it anymore. If they do that, the same problem will just come back again and we'll have another hiatus of several years.
It's not like Marvel's iconic books like Spider-man and X-men and other have ever only known one writer.
Sure it might not always be of impecable quality, but that doesn't mean it'll automatically be horrible.
JUST GIVE US MORE YA, MARVEL!!

On a side not, I don't think Billy and Teddy are all that opposites-attract. In human form Teddy isn't all that bigger than Billy (although he can shape-shift so that's subjective). And personality wise they're both in the same slightly dorky superhero worshipping category.

On a side note, it's good to know Dark Reign is drawing to a close.
Villains triumphant sound like a great premise, but I just haven't been liking the way it's being done in Dark Reign for some reason.
I've grown tired of it.

I think of Billy and Teddy as opposites in that one is a caster and one is a tank. (Is that my gamer slip showing?)

As to writers, I think it would be magnificent if Marvel were to give the green light to some young writer who's ready to prove her or his talent with what is, one must admit, kind of a small title. Imagine if they gave a regular Young Avengers book to someone and they turned out to be the next Matt Fraction? Yum.

Comic of the Week

Northstar's Boyfriend Coming In January! You guys may recall I was a bit cranky about Northstar and his lack of lovin' about a year and a half ago. In fact, at the time, I issued a challenge to Marvel to get him a kiss by June 2009 or I would declare him not really gay. I have not forgotten about this. However, when the X-men moved to San Francisco this year, we were teased with the existence of what looked to be Northstar's boyfriend (and manager), so I delayed judgment until we could see more. Since then, Northstar hasn't had a lot of major appearances, as there have been about a thousand major crossover events in the Marvel universe in the last six months, and each one tends to disrupt the normal storyline for most books, including the many X-books. So I waited. Our patience seems to have been rewarded! Artist Tim Fish revealed on his blog that his upcoming story in Nation X #2 (which comes out in Jan.) is a story about Northstar, and will feature Kyle, his boyfriend in an 8-page story. I'm not sure if an actual kiss is in it, but it's implied that there is some lovin' going on. Check out some sketches of Northstar, Kyle, and Aurora below, and we'll keep you up to date when we get closer to Jan. NATION X #2 1/6/10 [TimFishWorks]...
