WonderCon: Marvel's X-Men Panel

Marvel's X-Men office held a panel on Sunday at WonderCon to announce this year's summer X-Men event as well as talk about all things X. X-Men Editor Axel Alonso stated that it was appropriate to be making the announcement in San Francisco since that is the current home for the team.

In attendance were Axel Alonso, Sr. Editor of the X-Men books, and Matt Fraction, writer of Uncanny X-Men. Before the panel began, Matt Fraction had a personal announcement to make when he declared his friendship to Axel Alonso and asked Axel to be his Forever Friend in return, which included a pair of bracelets that Matt had bought with his and Axel's names on them. When Axel gushingly agreed by saying "You had me at bracelet", Matt completed the little ceremony by presenting the bracelet with Axel's name on it to him and tying it on his wrist.

With that touching moment being done, the panel moved to a series of slides with discussion about things that were coming up for the X-books as well as that eagerly anticipated special announcement that was to come, which you can read more about by following the link inside this article.

First up was a slide showing the X-Force and Cable crossover titled Messiah War. Axel stated that this is the second in a trilogy of Messiah stories where we learn more about this Messiah baby, who has green eyes and red hair. This green eyed-red-haired baby has been in Cable's care in the future for some time on the run from Bishop, who believes the child is responsible for bringing the horror of his future to being and seeks to kill the child. For months, Cyclops has been holding out hope that Cable and the baby are safe, and when he fears that something bad has happened, he sends X-Force to the future to bring the baby back. A slide was also shown of Styfe, the clone of cable who was responsible for some of the X-Men's trouble in the past, but Axel and Matt could not discuss what role Styfe has to play in Messiah War. Also, Matt and Axel cautioned the fans from assuming that Bishop has become a villain but rather look at him as a man who fears that the coming of the messiah baby means the arrival of the horrible future where he was born and is willing to go to great lengths to make sure that future never happens.

Another slide was shown of X-Men: Legacy, where Axel explained that Xavier and Gambit have returned to the Australian Outback in search of Rogue but are unaware that someone else has found Rogue first, Danger, the sentient creature who served as part of the X-Men's danger room at one point. As the search for Rogue draws to a conclusion, Axel promised that big changes were in store for one of those involved, either Xavier, Gambit, Rogue or Danger.

This summer proves to be a Wolverine-centric time with the upcoming Wolverine Origin movie set to debut on May 1st. A slide was shown of Old Man Logan, which is the story by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven that shows a future where something so horrible happened that caused Wolverine to give up violence forever. Another slide showed artwork for Wolverine: Weapon X, a new ongoing that has Wolverine going up against a team of adamantium men, a black-ops group who have discovered the Weapon X files. Then, the announcement was made that with Wolverine #75, Daken will take over the title which will then become Dark Wolverine.

A slide of the upcoming New Mutants title was shown as well as X-Infernus and Young X-Men. Axel confirmed that Young X-Men will be ending, but he and Matt promised that the younger mutants who make up the student body of Xaviers will continue to be seen. Matt mentioned that the X-writers have something in plan to explain what role the younger mutants have in the X-Men and even made mention of some sort of mentorship program that will soon come into play.

When X-Factor came up, Axel would only say that he was not allowed to talk about what was coming up, but that readers should stay peeled as Peter David ramps up the X-Factor fun as the book gears up for the fiftieth issue.

Over to Uncanny X-Men, Matt Fraction explained that the upcoming Sisterhood story arc, which will run through issue 511, will see some old favorites returning and some current favorites taking a dirt nap. When a fan asked if Matt planned on explaining what has happened to Madelyne Pryor between her time on X-Man to now, Matt demurely asked, "Isn't Madelyne Pryor dead?" He went on to say that this story will have so much action in it that he just finished writing the longest fight scene he's ever written at about 22-pages long. Following that arc, issue 512 will be a stand-alone issue where the brain trust group that Beast has been forming go into the past to the year 1906 where the world's first mutant is about to be born. The idea is that since they know the end of the mutant line, then they want to go into the past and see how the mutant line started.

This lead to the announcement that Axel had referred to at the beginning of the panel. This summer, Matt Fraction will be writing a six-part story that is currently untitled because it's so big that no title suggested has seemed big enough for it. The story will have the Uncanny X-Men crossing paths with the Dark Avengers, and it's not going to be pretty.

Things were then opened up for fans to ask questions. One fan asked about Astonishing X-Men, to which Axel stated that following the current Ghost Box run, they are attempting to return Astonishing to a more regular schedule and will be making announcements about the creative team soon, alluding to the possibility that Warren Ellis will not be writing the book following the conclusion to his current story.

When asked if Maggott will be returning, Matt took the opportunity to speak more about the upcoming summer event. Matt explained that when Osborn brought Emma Frost into the cabal, he did so with the understanding that Emma would keep the mutants in check. But something major happens where some mutants go wild and cause a lot of damage. Osborn sees this as a violation of the agreement he made with Emma and sends his Dark Avengers to take the X-Men out. Axel and Matt both promised big fights and things blowing up, which prompted many fans to take the mike and plead that Matt not blow up their homes. Axel stated that it would be a good time to live in the Mission district which would be safe. Another fan asked that they not destroy the Golden Gate bridge because that's been so overdone, to which Matt agreed and stated that the bridge would be standing at the conclusion of the story.

Another fan asked if Bendis is leaving Dark Avengers, which Axel explained that Matt is only writing Dark Avengers #7 and #8 for the crossover, where Bendis will return to the book after that. Both Matt and Axel assured fans that Bendis has a contributing role and helped Matt with planning the story.

One fan's plea for more Rogue prompted Axel to assure fans that next year will see more of Rogue, Gambit and Xavier as they take over the Legacy title after the conclusion of the Salvage arc.

When one fan asked Matt's advice for breaking in as a writer at Marvel, Matt and Axel stated that someone who wants to become a comic book writer should read as much as they could including things other than just comics and to just write, write, write.

Another fan asked Matt how long it took to produce a comic, to which Matt explained that from the time he starts writing until the issue is completed takes about 6 to 8 weeks. Axel then explained that no one on the creative team is focusing on just one issue but will be working on several issues at a time since each element of the creating process takes a different length of time to do than others. Matt also stated that he's scripted all the way up to Uncanny X-Men #512.

In regards to questions about whether certain characters will be seen again soon, Matt promised that with the summer event, many unseen characters will be returning. More specifically, Matt assured fans that Northstar is returning with issue #508 and that Magneto returns this month with issue 507.

This was the best write up on the X-Pannel I've read. Some of the things mentioned here were glossed over in other big comic sites posts about it, so good show.

The parts about a mutant disturbance bringing Osborn's attention and the Dark Avengers after the X-Men was a new point, and the mention of Northstar returning in issue #508 (yay!) was also very happy news untouched upon anywhere else. Great entry.

Glad you appreciated this. Yeah, I read some of the other news reports, and I was pretty disappointed that certain things got left out or glossed over. I know there's so much information that comes out at these panels that some things are bound to be forgotten, but I have a fairly good memory, so I wanted to make sure that things that hadn't gotten reported got put into my report.

Great coverage. I wanted to be there for it but the damned day job gave me a horrendous Monday deadline. I barely had time to go down and run through the exhibits :(

Yay! More gay characters (Victor and Jonas) going into limbo over at Marvel.

And it never seizes to amaze me that everyone at Marvel keeps forgetting that Apocalypse is the worlds first mutant. Even in stories with him in it.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1 I literally clapped my hands together and said OhMyGodYesssss when the friendly staff member at my regular shop held this book out to hand it to me. Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung finally - finally - return to this title with a nine issue limited series. I will spare you paragraphs of pontification and cut to the chase: it's not just good, it's the best thing Marvel has going, period. Read on for the pontification and petty quibbles!...
