Batwoman Goes Independant

Unlike some other UK newspapers, the Independent gets most of the information correct on the news about Batwoman. Replacing the recently deceased Batman, Kathy Kane takes over the spotlight in the Detective Comics flagship title.
As quoted in the article (from the original CBR interview), writer Greg Rucka espouses the following:
"We have been waiting to unlock her. It's long overdue," he said in an interview with the Comic Book Resources website. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue. That's certainly not mine."
I'm not going to argue Rucka, but I have to wonder what the hell took DC so damn long to bring Batwoman to the forefront. She was introduced back in 2006 with some big fanfare at WizardWorld Philadelphia and we've heard very little about her in the interim and even less of her supposed ongoing title that never materialized.
However, I suppose if she can't solo in her own book, headlining a title like Detective Comics is certainly a good start.
