GLAAD Nominees For Outstanding Comic

300px-Young_Avengers_Presents_Vol_1_3.jpg

GLAAD has announced their annual list of nominees for their GLAAD Media Awards and as with the past several years, there is a comic book category.

OUTSTANDING COMIC BOOK
The Alcoholic by Jonathan Ames (Vertigo/DC Comics)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Drew Goddard, Jeph Loeb and Joss Whedon (Dark Horse Comics)
Final Crisis: Revelations by Greg Rucka (DC Comics)
Secret Six by Gail Simone (DC Comics)
Young Avengers Presents by Ed Brubaker, Brian Reed, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Paul Cornell, Kevin Grevioux and Matt Fraction (Marvel Comics)

Is there a better example of the LGBT community in comics that they overlooked?

You can check out the full rundown of nominees for all categories (and I mean all categories, they get really specific at times) right here.

I feel they really dropped the ball.

Manhunter is a much better representation of gays in comics. Buffy and Batwoman are just titillating lesbians for straight fanboys. Batwoman has potential to be more but it hasn't been realized in any DC title as of yet. And Secret Six? I love the title - but the only gay character has been doted on by Bane for how many issues and she hasn't kicked his ass yet?

my 2 cents worth (the post safe for work - site is not - so beware)

Xavin, from Runaways, is just coming to terms with him/herself as a transgendered "youth". Why no recognition there?

I don't know The Alcoholic, so I can't comment on that.
Buffy is just way out of the park though. Is this because of Buffy's 'outing'? It's just Whedon's hang up of wanting all his female characters to be gay so he can perv on them a little more.
And Revelations had its ups and downs. Montoya is portrayed as a great protagonist. Batwoman on the other hand is really not treated well, fawning (in her brainwashed state mind you) over the resident male bad guy.
Secret Six I think does deserve it. And just saying that it doesn't because she doesn't kick the ass of a guy acting like a father to her is a bit OTP if you ask me.
I also expected Manhunter to be on there though. Pretty ridiculous that it's not.

i don't see Bane's behavior as fatherly. Some of it is sort of is, but I think he wants her so it's creepy.

I don't get that impression at all.
Though I do think it's supposed to look ambiguous.
Like in the last issue where he asked her to lay her head on his lap and she assumed he meant something sexual, but then she realised he just wanted for her to have a rest.
I guess just like her, you're just too jaded. :P

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
