A Rogue's Look at the Indies #2: Mercy Sparx

Mercy Sparx.jpg

For every Marvel or DC book being published, there's always going to be a need for DDP Comics or Zenescope. For every issue of Amazing Spider-Man that Marvel creates, there's books like Cerebus and Madman. Just like people come in many shapes and sizes, there are a diverse range of comics being produced that appeal to different tastes. So, why is it that everyone knows about Spider-Man while it takes the hard core comic geek to tell you who Madman or Cerebus is? The biggest reason is that Spider-Man is produced by Marvel, one of the big companies, while Madman and Cerebus are self-produced or produced by smaller companies who don't have the fan following that Marvel and DC have.

Ocassionally a story would be more popular among fans and the general public if only the fans knew the story was out there. That is something I hope to provide with this column as each week I bring focus to an independant title that I feel deserves some recognition.

This week, I want to introduce you all to a series from Devil's Due Publishing (DDP) called Mercy Sparx. Mercy Sparx is a fresh new spin on an old story. In a world with Angels and Demons, conflict between the two is quite common, usually with the Angel being sent to kick the evil Demon's butt as an agent from on high. However, in the case of Mercy Sparx, it's the Demon's turn to kick Angel butt and take the high road because it's the demon doing the Lord's biding.

Mercy Sparx is your typical girl-demon rebel. She lives in a hellish city called Sheol. Born from two full-fledged demons, Mercy had nothing to do with the battle for the heavens where Lucifer and his angels fell from grace, but it doesn't matter because she's still not welcome in Heaven. Mercy has the attitude of a young woman who doesn't care about much except for what feels good to her. When she's approached by a demon from a higher class than her, she's offered the chance of a lifetime, catch a few Angels who are causing trouble, and she'll be allowed through the pearly gates. As soon as she's given her assignment, Mercy finds herself transported to Earth, where she's given a human form and her first target, a muse turned Deejay by the name of Serendipity. She gets to kick Angel ass and feel good about it. What a life, right? Except it seems that not all is what it appears, and Heaven just might have an ulterior motive behind Mercy's new gig.

Mercy Sparx is an action packed ride with an interesting premise, good writing, and excellent art. Created by Josh Blalock and Matt Merhoff, this three-issue limited series is definitely one to check out. While I'm sad that this is only a three-issue story, I'm hoping that the sales are solid enough that the creators and DDP will bring further stories of Mercy Sparx. The first issue along with a zero issue that sets up the story are in stores now. Due to this being an indie book, the schedule is a little off, so it's a little unclear when #2 is scheduled to be released. However, this title is so good that it's well worth the wait. Check it out.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
