LGBT Character Of The Week - Graymalkin

graymalkin01.jpg

Well this one was a surprise to me, as I hadn't caught up on Manifest Destiny yet, but the blog Heroes'n'Hunks got me up to speed. In issue #3 of Manifest Destiny, his origin is told.

Graymalkin, also known as Jonas Greymalkin, was actually born over 200 years ago. His father, catching him with another boy in the barn, beat him mercilessly until he went unconcious, then buried him alive because he believed him to be an 'abomination'.

At this point Greymalkin's mutant abilities activated, as they are strengthened when he is in darkness. Beast theorizes that the absolute darkness of being buried alive kept him invulnerable and in a state of suspended animation. The exact extent of his powers is not yet known, but that they are stronger in darkness (IE at night). He has night vision, enhanced agility and toughness, and super strength. He eventually wakes up after the events of Messiah Complex, as he was buried on the grounds of Xavier's mansion. (and is in fact revealed to be distantly related to the Professor)

In Manifest Destiny #3 he tells his origin to Anole, another gay Young X-Man, after a pleasant evening out.

I was pleasently surprised, but I hope they won't pair him off with Vic.
I'm still holding out for an Anole/Indra coupling.

That's funny...is "Graymalkin" a common surname? I only ever heard it used as a name for a witch's familiar. While I know almost nothing about the character, I hate when they have ironic or 'cutsie' real names that somehow reflect who they are. It's like someone with the last name of "Greenberg" turning into a giant, green iceberg...get it?

Nexus said:

He doesn't change into a cat or anything. His powers have nothing to do with being a witches' familiar.
And I don't see how Graymalkin is any less normal a surname than Summers or Grey or Worthington.
Weird thing to get hung up on if you ask me.

Jeez, just because I have an opinion doesn't mean I'm "hung up" on it (whatever the hell that's suppose to mean). Perhaps I find you being so defensive about it kinda weird. Oh, and Summers, Grey and Worthington are, you know, actual surnames...not that I'm hung up about it.

Seeing as how I found this page when I was trying to find the correct spelling of the school's address, 1407 Greymalkin Lane, I'm guessing that, while his family has been part of the place's backstory for a while, Jonas is a very recent extension.

I was hoping you guys would do a write up on this. I'd read the Manifest Destiny story on Greymalkin, been plesantly suprised at the cleverness and sensitivity of it, and newly impressed with the character. Its one thing to be ostrasized for being a double minority in the present tense. Being a 200 year old double minority who'd been burried alive for two centuries? Your backstory just got a whole lot more interesting. Greymalkin's power set is sort of uninspired, but he's such an undeveloped character that I'm very interested in what happens next.

And secondly, I don't exactly want an Anole/Greymalkin paring either. Just because two people are gay in a group doesn't mean they'll a.) get along famously or b.) be dating material. I wish my straight friends would recall this before setting me up.

Well I seem to remember Beast saying that Greymalkin's powers were still not fully known, so he might hold some surprises.

I do find it really idiotic how Beast wondered what other bigotry other than anti-mutant crimes could possibly have befallen Jonas.
This from one of Marvel's biggest minds. Mind you, looking at Reed Richards and Amadeus Cho (to name but two), being one of Marvel's smartest guys on the planet isn't saying much. Stupid mistakes galore.

I am also on the "just friends" bandwagon. I'd rather see the 2 of them as newly out (if Graymalkin tells anyone but Anole) young gay mutants in the Marvel U's San Francisco than as an instant lovey dovey couple.

Great site! Hope to see some of you commenting at www.HeroesNHunks.com sometime!

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
