Pulling Up The Covers #1

As we enter those blustery winter months, it's time to crank up the heat, grab someone close and cover ourselves up for the night. Of course, given my penchant for puns that means a new column spotlighting some of the best covers of our favorite books. These covers could be standouts for their design, their emotional impact, their humor or just being a spectacular piece of artwork.
Last week's books had some nifty art to gaze upon, but the cover to Amazing Spider-Man #578 really took the cake. Aside from being a gorgeous, yet understated piece, it works very well as both an homage to the famous Steve Ditko sequence depicting Spidey lifting tons of machinery to save Aunt May from Amazing Spider-Man #33.
The mostly black cover only makes the bright red and white of Spider-Man's costume all the more striking in contrast. The sheer overpowering blackness adds a real feel of confinement that plays out in the story as Mr. Parker is trapped in a subway car as the tunnel caves in.
The fact that the logo is distorted (not seen here, though) adds weight to the wreckage he is holding up only adds gravitas to the image as the logo is rarely modified these days.
The art is by interior artist Marcos Martin.
Think I'm wrong? Should I have spotlighted a different cover?
