Guardians of the Galaxy #6

Note to self: NEVER anger a psychic Russian dog. The team deals with the Skrull threat on the station, only to find out that the remaining Skrulls aren't as dangerous as they appear. But with one crisis resolved, another rears it's head as Mantis' tampering with the teams minds is finally exposed.

Justice Society of America #19

This issue the whole Gog issue finally starts to come to a head, and it's looking ominously like Kingdom Come. I'm loving it. A way to integrate such an amazing story into mainstream continuity is a welcome gesture to me. And to top it off, we've got Earth-2 madness going on.

MUST HAVE

Final Crisis: Rogues Revenge #3 (of 3)

This three part series may go down for me as the best thing DC has done all year. It's a glorious wrap-up to the story started by Bart Allen's death, and reminds everyone why the Rogue's have been around so long. Part of me is really sad to see this series end, I'd love to see a book just for the rogues, if it was this good.

Captain Britain and MI-13 #6:

The plot thickens as Blade's presence o the team is questionable now, although Spitfire doesn't seem to be in as much danger as we thought she'd be. She's such a trooper, that one. Brian's about to go on a metaphysical hayride it would seem if the last page revelation is true. This book continues to shine as an example of crisp plotting that incorporates the mythos of Marvel's continuity while not being a slave to it in the slightest. I'm also loving the examination of Marvel's magical side as it is often overlooked.

The Amazing Spider-Man #573:

The sixth and final part of "New Ways to Die" doesn't hit quite the high note I was hoping for, but it still has reinvigorated my love for the websliger. Everything from Anti-Venom and the return of Eddie Brock to seeing Norman Osborn in Spidey's pages and Peter's great supporting cast mean this book is one to read again. The back-up story with Stephen Colbert was funny, but inconsequential really. Still worth a laugh. If you left Spidey during "The Other" or "One More Day," it's time to come back and read "New Ways to Die." Next month's solicit for a Flash Thompson flashback seems promising too.

Must Have

Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. #34:

The second part fo the "War Machine: Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D." storyline certain upes the ante for one Mr. James Rhodes. His satellite armor kicks some serious ass but it's the final page reveal that's got me waiting with bated breath for the next issue. It's a great step forward in making these massive events work correctly and I'm glad Rhodey is getting the spotlight at the same time. The book may be getting the axe to make room for the better selling "Invincible Iron Man" title, but it's certainly going out with a bang.

Mighty Avengers #19

Confession time again: I know next to nothing about Captain Marvel. Sure, I know his basic storyline, but since I never read the old Avengers books, I never had a chance to really get to know the character. Now I really want to. This issue of Mighty Avengers is played out with mostly inner monologue, and it really shows what's going on in the head of Skrull-Mar-Vell (or whatever you want to call him). It's a great psychological story, and when it ends you'll really want to see what happens next.

MUST HAVE

NYX: No Way Home #3

I picked up the first issue on a recommendation, then immediately had to track down the trade of the original mini-series. This is a GREAT book, but if you haven't read the first NYX series, then you'll be as lost as I was. Not to say that's a bad thing. Too many books try to start fresh to gain new fans. It's always nice to see a comic stick to it's own story. This issue itself is especially good, focusing on Bobby (who didn't get much face time in the first mini), a mutant with the ability to "possess" people, but at the cost of some of his memory. I'm loving this book to death, but I have to wonder....when will these kids EVER catch a break?!?

Read it.

Young X-Men #7

I had serious doubts about this book, but now that the introductions are out of the way, I think I might find myself liking this team. No, I'm not quite in love yet. The problem I had going in was that there was nothing about the new characters that made me care about if they lived or died (looking at you, Wolf Cub), but now we're starting to see some real emotional development amongst each member. Strike that. There's emotional development, but it's not happening with the team. Graymalken chats it up with Emma Frost, Anole gets buddy buddy with Sunfire, Rockslide spills his guts to Moonstar, and Dust has a sit-down chat with....Pierce? Um...if you want to hype this as a team book, Marvel, don't you think you should have some actual teamwork going on? That issue aside, you could do a lot worse (see the first 6 issues), then checking out this one.

DCU DECISIONS #3 (OF 4)

Dadnabbit! Just when I thought this mini was telling a good, original story, they had to ruin it by using the villain that they used. There's a dozen other ways this story could have been good, and I had a suspicion on who the bad guy was that would have REALLY made for interesting comics, but NO, DC has to go the predictable route even though the writers probably thought they were being "Shocking"! Good grief. I hope issue four is better and actually makes sense out of the big villain reveal. As for this issue....

Read it

X-MEN: WORLDS APART #1 (OF 4)

Sheesh!! What is with it this week? Both of the first two comics I reviewed had crappy endings when the bad guys were revealed. In Worlds Apart, there was so much potential. Points were made about Storm's life as an X-Man and as the Black Panther's wife that I myself have felt. I'll have no problem admitting that I hated the Storm/Black Panther marriage from the beginning, and the events that happened in this issue made me giddy with glee. Until that big reveal of who the bad guy is, that is. Good gravy! Must all X-Men comics have the same old rehashed villains in it over and over again?

Skip it

FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #2 (OF 5)

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I'm frustrated because this story seems to be dragging. It's the second issue, and we're still being teased about the three legions interacting with each other. However, on the other hand, Johns is an incredibly talented writer who can make even the more random of scenes touching. Also, this issue was loaded with cool character moments. So, I guess Johns can be forgiven for padding out the story to make it five issues long instead of the original three issues. As always, George Perez is the KING when it comes to huge crowd scenes. I wish Perez could live forever and draw nearly every comic coming out these days.

Well that was dissapointing.
I just read Young X-men 7 and maybe I should have known better, but I actually believed Sunfire might have showed up there. Instead it's SunSPOT.
And here I was hoping for a redemption and maybe even a Living Lightning style sudden outing and him and Anole getting 'budyy-buddy'. :
Anyway, the book continues to dissapoint. Anole looks worse than he ever has. His body is all wrong and the least said about his spikes the better. Get him on a main book please.
I guess I'm at least grateful that twat Canonball doesn't seem to be on the main roster. For now anyway.

Comic of the Week

Review: Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1 I literally clapped my hands together and said OhMyGodYesssss when the friendly staff member at my regular shop held this book out to hand it to me. Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung finally - finally - return to this title with a nine issue limited series. I will spare you paragraphs of pontification and cut to the chase: it's not just good, it's the best thing Marvel has going, period. Read on for the pontification and petty quibbles!...
