The Astonishing Elf Girl's Tales from the Comic Shop (of Horror!)

TAEGT.jpg

A day late and a slightly different set up this time around. Today, and weekly from now (until I think of a tip, actually) on I will regale you with tales of the dark and mysterious comic shop; strange tales to chill your bones, scare little kids and...

Ah, frak it. On with the stories.

Tale #1 ~ Night of the Living Geek Girl

A semi-regular came into the shop, he doesn't buy a whole lot that I've seen, some DC's, an occasional Marvel, and mainly Hulk's. He'd apparently had a stressful day and was unwinding by talking to Bill (and by being in the store, me as well :P) I would get a few things in about things going on in comics, but he mainly talked to Bill, or talked at Bill anyway. As things went on, I got more and more in edgewise about things, sometimes Bill was unsure of details, sometimes, I just knew more than Bill did on a storyline.

We ended up getting on the subject of Green Lantern, and he was apparently somewhat confused on the whole thing (that there are so many centered around Earth). Bill told him about the history of the Earth GL's, I chimed in that Kyle Rayner became Ion after Hal Jordan came back, and he asked about Hal. I'd just read the whole Parallax story with Hal's return as GL, so I explained some of it.

He stopped me and said "I don't mean to sound sexist or anything..." Which you immediately know he's going to say something that's at least moderately sexist. It's the same when you hear someone say "I'm not a racist, but..." You just know the next thing out of their mouth will be racist in some fashion.

More after the jump!

"I don't mean to sound sexist or anything...but you are one knowledgeable chick!!" Not the worst thing he could have said ( ie "You know a lot for a chick" is a little worse). He then asked how it was possible, which still wasn't the best question. I do understand to a certain degree where he's coming from, he is from a slightly older generation that was really oblivious to female comic readers; he also usually comes in when there are little to no female customers in the store. It certainly does excuse it, but it does explain it.

I told him I'd read comics since I was ten, but, ironically (since this was the first question directed at me), I was droned out by Bill saying "She reads a lot" and the customer going into the next subject about his daughter reading and watching Buffy. I don't know that he ever heard the answer to his question.

Tale #2 ~ The Psychic Clerk

As I was out wandering around downtown with my girlfriend and some friends, we went into a hat shop. This hat shop is very cool and filled with a ton of very cool hats that are too expensive for my meager pay (yet still very cool). Even so, we like to look; as we looked around, I saw someone familiar, a regular from the shop. He walked by to buy his new hat, I waved, but he totally ignored me. Story of my life. ;)

Anyway, later at the comic shop, he shows up a few minutes after my shift starts. AND he's wearing his new hat. I walk out and say "Hmm...you just bought that hat today."

He looks at me kind of surprised, but not too much. It was clearly a new hat, so he likely thought it was a lucky guess. Which is when I said:

"And you bought it at about 2:45pm this afternoon at the shop on Main Street." Now his eyes grew large and he said "What, are there cameras around me?" half serious, half jokingly. I laughed and told him I saw him at the hat shop, but he didn't see me. He laughed at the explanation and asked why I didn't say hello. I told him if I did, I wouldn't have been able to play the joke on him.

So much fun.

Thus ends the tales for this week. Return next week for more Tales From the Comic Shop (of Horror!!). Mmmm...cheesy.
