Special Review: Golly! #1
So at the comic store this week, I picked up a comic I'd never even heard of. This isn't normal for me. But the cover (seen above) drew me in and I just couldn't resist. I flipped a few pages in and read a bit, and knew immediately that I wanted it. That comic was Golly! from Image, created by Phil Hester, and it was probably the best three bucks I spent all week.
The story follows a young man named Golly Munhollen, who repairs rides for Colonel Ruplinger's Traveling Carnival and Motorsports Exposition. Golly is just sort of coasting through life, when fate taps him on the shoulder. Well, actually, fate punches him in the face via a former fat lady (now muscled-up she-hulk) named Pig. Then it gets weird.
Knocked unconscious, Golly meets an Angel (of sorts), that reveals to him the secret of Armageddon.
It's cancelled.
Turns out, the powers above and below really don't have it in them to end the world. They've lost interest. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but it seems those on the side of evil don't all know this, and have plans waiting to be activated that would cause the end of humanity. So god needs an agent on earth to stop them.
And they picked Golly. A carnival repairman with a foul mouth who gets his words wrong half the time.
The art in this book is great, the writing fantastic, and the comedic timing is impeccable. Just from the first issue I'm having wonderful nostalgia back to Sandman and Preacher, and I get the vibe that it can only get better from here. Folks, I highly recommend you check this book out, because I think this one is going to be special.
