Booster Gold 1,000,000
I had a bit of a soft spot for the old DC One Million crossover. It was a fun way for characters to re-imagined without affecting the greater DC Universe, and the writing was good, if a bit silly. Plus it had a really nice ending. Since Booster is now a time-traveling savior of the universe, it's only right he should go back to that future. (wait, what?)
The issue itself concerns Booster having a crisis of faith. Unable to change the past enough to save Barbara Gordon from being shot or Ted Kord from dying, he quits Rip Hunter's new Time Masters and goes off to make his own way. A talk from Batman makes him think harder about his position.
If you haven't been reading Booster Gold, then you better be waiting for the trade because it's one of the best things DC has done since 52. This issue in particular contains a shocker as to the identity of one of the most mysterious heroes in the DCU.

Justice Society of America #17
Gog just goes on fixing people, and the heroes go on being creeped out by him. And when Stargirl mentions how useless she feels, things get weird, and the result is entirely unexpected. Obviously we're being led to some sort of confrontation with Gog, but they seem pretty outclassed in a fight right now.

Nova #15
Oh poor Richard is in for it now. In a desperate attempt to escape a planet before Galactus can eat it, he's done something foolhardy. Only time will tell if he can recover from it, but in the meantime he tracks down the true source of Harrow. This concludes the recent and fantastic storyline of his encounter with Galactus, and appears to be setting up the next larger story arc. Definitely one of the best things Marvel is doing right now.

I Kill Giants #1
Interesting. That's the one word I would use to describe the debut issue of this indie book. Barbara is a slightly eccentric 5th grader with a passion for D&D and high fantasy. She...well...she kills giants, as she states in the book. It's still very early to tell where exactly this story is going and it feels a little unfocused, so I can't really recommend this book yet. For now...

Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! #1
OK...I am really not the right target audience for this book, I know. But something about Captain Marvel has always appealed to me so I decided to give this book a shot. It's ok for a younger audience, but you won't get much out of this; especially if you're a stickler for continuity. Skip this title and buy a half a gallon of gas instead!

Pilot Season: Urban Myths #1
When the rest of the books I picked this week failed to impress, I thought that the whole week had been a wash (with Invincible Iron Man #3 and Detective Comics #846 being the exceptions). Urban Myths is the story of Medusa's son, Jack Medusa, who is a detective in an interesting world that combines classic Greek myths with a modern world setting. The premise feels fresh and the short self-contained story is a good sample of things that may (or may not) come, depending on how people vote on this Pilot Season contest.

Secret Invasion #4
We already saw signs of the main Secret Invasion book slowing down with last issue's glacial pacing and now we have almost arrived to a complete stop. Suspension of disbelief is key here, as we see a previous bad-ass Ms. Marvel get her ass kicked and Skrulls easily taken out by mere mortal bullets...right. The last few panels induced a yawn from me, as the arrival of ____ and ____ does little for the title. In all honesty, it would be weird if those specific characters did NOT show up. It's sad to see the main SI book being overshadowed by the fantastic tie-ins.

Elf Girl's Reviews
Detective Comics #846
Even though it has the RIP tag on it, only Batman has the official RIP story, the rest are just extras. This issue starts off another return of Hush, and Batman and Catwoman confront him. Hush's back story is fleshed out further, and you get glimpses of his strange plan.
Read it.
New Exiles #8
This issue is horrendously bad. Seriously, the only reason I finished reading it was for this review. Between the horrendous dialogue, inane catch phrases and boring plot, it's not even worth flipping through.
Burn It.
Amazing Spider-Girl #22
Brand New May continues...kinda. The main story behind the title isn't talked about much and it's mainly Spidey and Push (bad name) against the leader of the Sisterhood of Mutants. It's not a bad issue, fans of the series should definitely read it, but for the average reader, it doesn't really go anywhere.

Ultimate Origins #2 (of 5)
Wait - this is an Ultimate book? Aside from the present day opening with the Fantastic Four, the origin for Captain America is not much different from the main universe origin. I don't have a problem with Cap's beginnings, in fact I think it's one of the best origin stories out there, but shouldn't the Ultimate version have some added depth to it? Or even if it isn't depth, how about just something new? As it stands, the only reason to read this book is to get the next step of the Ultimate Origins storyline and not get lost with the gray totem pole.

Guardians of the Galaxy #3
This series continues its tight storytelling even with the plot being split in two, half focusing on the main team against the intergalactic church and the other with Mantis and Vance Astro in Knowhere. Starhawk makes his badass return, with an interesting development with mantis and her powers, and tussles pretty heavily with Astro. Strange since they're friends, stranger still that Starhawk never speaks. The cliffhanger at the end definitely draws you into next month's fourth issue. I've never been a hardcore Marvel space fan, but this book is really turning me around on the genre.

Captain Britain and MI-13 #3
Anther genre I was never really into (though more than space) was Marvel's magic realms. Otherworld and Britain's connection to the fantasy was always interesting more than something to buy for me. With Paul Cornell's Captain Britain/Pete Wisdom series I'm starting to see why it's worth spending money on these books. Great story combined with real consequences and an ear for catchy dialogue make this book a great sleeper series. It doesn't hold your hand and explain everything, but you're rarely lost in the fervor. The art is crisp and clean and it remains timely with the Secret invasion storyline raging right now. You should be getting this book if you're on a budget because it's a great red and is self contained while at the same time adding to the larger picture.

That's it for this week!

SI #4 wasn't very satisfying at all. The whole ms. marvel thing was BS. Compelte BS. I'm not even in fanboy denial like with Spider-woman. I'm not the biggest Ms. Marvel fan, but that scenario was forced and trying to give weight to the narative in the panels.
I was liking it until this issue. I won't say it ruined it for me, but I do think it soured it. I was pretty happy that the one person who was actually kicking ass was a woman, but changing that for SI #4 just made no sense.
Then again, there's a possibility the one in SI #4 is a Skrull herself. In her own book, she already was in New York when the invasion began; dealing with the fake Ms Marvel and Lightning Storm wanting to take her down. In SI #1, she's in the Savage Land and Iron Man sends her to New York.
Granted, it's more likely that they totally goofed on continuity and Bendis' version of things will be the "official" one. :P
