MTV Becomes Unbeatable

The New York Times of all places is reporting that the Image Comics series Invincible is headed to not only the small screen, but the REALLY small screen.

Available on iTunes, XBOX Live, cell phones and on regular TV via MTV2, the superpowered series will be a new spin on an old idea. Not too far removed from the old 1960s Marvel cartoons that were staid images just moved across the camera, Invincible will be adapted from the comics in the most literal sense.

But it's not quite animation in the traditional sense. "I like to think of it as cinematic comics -- digital cinematic comics," said David Gale, executive vice president of MTV New Media, which is producing the episodes in partnership with Gain Enterprises.

The process starts with digital scans of the actual comic book pages. They are turned into an audio-visual experience through a process called Bomb-xx developed by Gain.

In the end, the formerly two-dimensional comic book suddenly pulses with music, while word balloons pop up and fill in as actors recite the dialogue and panels zoom in and out and pivot in all directions. The frenetic energy is not unlike that of an MTV video.

While I fail to see comparing the upcoming show to an MTV video as being a positive, it's at least an interesting idea and there's always room for something new at the table. The first four books of the series will comprise the first twelve episodes of the series, which are only the start of the first thirty six episodes which which should be completed sometime in September.

I think most people will be on the fence about the project until they see it (there will be a screening at San Diego - surprise, surprise), but it does bode well that series co-creator Robert Kirkman approved of the series.

Personally I think it sounds like crap.

Ever heard of apocalyps. when limited animation isn't limited enough.
This is the attack of the animated / sound comics. It's nice as a small promotion feature but for the real deal.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
