The Moment Of The Week - You Decide!
So, this is a new thing we're trying. We're going to show you what we consider the biggest 'Moments' from last weeks comics. The moments that show why you should be reading these comics. Or, in the mutilated words of C&C Music Factory, the Moments that make you go HMMMM.
This week, we'll be taking a look at Captain Britain, Booster Gold, Urban Myths, and Final Crisis: Requiem. Once you've taken a look, we want you to vote on which of these was the most amazing moment from last weeks comics.
So join me after the jump, and be warned. Spoilers lie beyond. So if you yet plan to pick up any of these books, don't read ahead because it'll ruin the surprise!
Pilot Season: Urban Myths #1
So the concept to Urban Myths is interesting. It's a modern world, but it's a world where the ancient Greek myths were true. Apollo chariots the sun around. Hades is real. Minotaurs drive cars. The main character is Jack Medusa, son of the original Medusa. He's a detective of sorts (and has the whole snake head curse thing going, too). In this first issue, he has to save a girl who went to Hades to try and rescue her dead father. He doesn't have much time left to get back to the other side of the river when he meets someone unexpected...his mom.
A touching moment. This comic starts out strong, I hope the next issue is as good.
Captain Britain and M-13 #3
The Skrulls have captured pretty much all the magic in Britain and used it to make a magical Super-Skrull, the army is on the verge of being overwhelmed, and Captain Britain was killed trying to stop a missile. However, when a timely sacrifice is made, Merlin is freed (along with quite a bit of evil), and reveals the good Captain was allowed to die to keep him from losing his power as well. Merlin does his thing and just as Magic Skrull is about to defeat the last defender we get a lovely little Deus Ex Machina...
Magic Skrull is proper f**ked now. His new suit is fabulous and he's got Excalibur.
Booster Gold #1,000,000
Booster spends a good chunk of this issue upset over his inability to alter the past for better, and that his legacy will only be to inspire greater con-men than himself. After an amazing scene with Batman (which I almost put here, but you'll have to go buy the comic to read it) his resolve is strengthened. He returns to Rip to find... his sister?
And just to clarify the shocker here. Rip Hunter, being a time traveler, is using an alias. This is so that other time travelers, IE his foes, cannot go back in time and kill him as a child. So take that into consideration when thinking about what they just revealed here. Trust me, Booster Gold is the best comic you're not reading, so start buying it. Also, SKEETS IN A BERET!
Final Crisis: Requiem
Final Crisis has been shaping up... interestingly... but one world-changing fact of it's arrival was the death of the Martian Manhunter, J'onn J'onzz. In this issue we learn a bit more about his final moments, and the toll he took on his captors before they put him down. The rest of the issue is his funeral, of which I only show the last two pages.
I always had a soft spot for J'onn. He was in nearly every incarnation of the Justice League.
DC has killed a lot of big characters in the past year, for good or bad. I've been critical of this as well, because often they come back really quickly, so much so that it's becoming cliché, taking away the meaning of the death. Part of me does want them back of course, but another part of me hopes that they'll leave them this way, to show that the DC Universe can change. Because having things always end up the same in the end, forever, is kind of boring. Though I have to admit, I kind of teared up at the end there, with the cookie. Goodbye J'onn, I kind of hope YOU come back.
And that's our contenders for this week. Now vote, and tell us which you think is the best! (and kick yourself for not reading these comics earlier, if you weren't. Shame on you!)
