Longshot: We Hardly Knew Ye

Okay, granted, Longshot isn't really dead (at the moment), but it doesn't change the fact that few people outside of hardcore X-Men fans even know who he is. This is why it's a little strange that Marvel is releasing a premiere hardcover for him.
Now, the limited series that's being collected is actually quite good, but it's just such an odd and seemingly random character to choose for the hardcover treatment. Don't read this as a condemnation, however. I love the fact that Marvel is taking chances like this and spotlighting good reads regardless of the marquee name. Bravo.
The limited series is by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams, two people who are due more credit for their work in building Marvel than they're given.
Check out the gallery below for the covers (why do hardcover collections need a variant cover?) and a sneak peek at some of the bonus content. You can also hit the jump for the straight skinny from Marvel.

I used to have all of his solo comics (all four of them!). Who would have thought that Spiral would be the more visible one over time than the hero himself? Of course, Spiral was one of those characters whose powers, origins, motivations, and personality seems to have changed consistently throughout time. But I suppose when you're a genetically altered, mystical, time and space bending former human stuntwoman or whatever, you can be basically what you want.
That being said, I'm still surprised Longshot hasn't made a comeback. There was, however, always that argument that Longshot was NOT a mutant technically since he wasn't really human, but Marvel in those days wouldn't have addressed it. Then again, Storm had no powers and got to stay in the X-men while she didn't.
At any rate, saddest thing about losing Longshot was losing Dazzler at the same time. I do not like the ULtimate dazzler so much. Disco divas for the win!
I love Longshot...and Art Adams is my fav artist! (behind Jack Kirby).
Longshot's time in the Xmen was generally a good time for the story arch, IMO.
Connie said: Storm had no powers and got to stay in the X-men while she didn't.
Storm didn't have powers, but she was still a human mutant...er..uh..mutant human...
I never liked Longshot. In fact I hated him.
Then again, I hate most 'player'-type characters. And I have found that most other people seem to love them. What's so attractive about egotistical people-using pricks is beyond me.
I never cared that much for Longshot, either. Though he did rock that mullet...
He was in Exiles for awhile, supposedly the same one, too. Apparently, there's only one Longshot...
Yes he was in exiles, right about the time it hit it's really spectacular suck groove.
I enjoyed Longshot and Art Adams' work in general. Is he really in exiles. I like psylocke too but claremont's work is really wonky lately.
I'd like to check this out.
I didn't think Exiles sucked until Claremont took over. It wasn't fantastic just before, but I still liked it quite a bit. (The Proteus thing went way too long, though. :P)
Claremont cooked it into a really big log of suck, but everything after hyperion killed magick was downhill.
The dialogue became increasingly bland and there was little difference in the stories than your average superhero story. I can't think of a major development in any of the characters since Sasquatch had to kill wolverine (save for possibly some stuff done with beak which was what kept me reading.)
And yeah, world tour was.... well it just was.
I held out high hopes for Exiles to get back on track for a long time, then yeah... Claremont...
Well, there was the Timebreakers, return of Hyperion, death of Namora (who I really liked), plus the funerals for all of the dead; all of which I thought was very good. *Shrug* To each their own.
Meh. Maybe I was spoiled.
