Iron Man Sequel To Be Favreau-ized

iron-man-movie-poster-1.jpg

Nikki Finke from L.A. Weekly is reporting that Jon Favreau has reached a deal with Marvel for him to direct the Iron Man sequel. Check out Finke's brief article below.

EXCLUSIVE: It's not officially announced yet, but I'm told that Marvel Studios and Iron Man director Jon Favreau have reached a deal for him to helm the sequel, due out in 2010. (Robert Downey Jr had a sequel clause in his contract so he's on board.) Marvel Studios boss David Maisel was quick to put out a "definitely" richer offer to Favreau, but not quick enough for Jon -- who used the Internet and other media to rile up the movie's many fans by spreading nonsense that Marvel was dragging its feet and then lowballing him. Granted Maisel is no day at the beach himself, but, seriously, could Favreau have been more of an asshole?

I'm definitely pleased as I thought Favreau did a bang up job on the first one and he and Downey seemed to have a good relationship. Consider me pleased.

I'm worried about the "due out in 2010" thing; likely in May again. Which gives them just under two years to write a script, do pre production, film, post production and make it look good. Which is possible in just under two years, but very unlikely.

While I do share in your hesitation, don't forget that a number of issues have been resolved in the first film. The armor's been designed and manufactured, most of the casting is done, they have the sets in storage. A lot of time consuming pieces can be held over from the first one so it should easier than that, tho it's still a daunting task to have it done by May of 2010.

Mainly I'm worried most about is it feeling rushed or forced, like Spidey 3.

I was at Comic Con last year when Jon and Robert showed up. Jon was very clear with the audience he had a 3 parter in mind already. It should be fine - IF - the Avengers prep doesn't de-rail script points Jon wants to hit.

He had pointed out he wanted to explore the alcoholic Tony in part 2 and there have been worries that would be too dark for the franchise.

I would be more worried about Marvel nick picking the story Jon wants to tell or over exposure with all the expected crossover ramp up to Avengers.
