Here Comes A New Challenger: Yen Plus

yenpluslogo.jpg

Finally, a newcomer joins the fold of Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat to bring us extra serialized manga love. Premiering near the end of this month, Yen Plus hopes to take on Viz's monopoly of monthly doses of manga. With a good chunk of Square-Enix titles and a few extra "wrong ways" manga, I think they might have a chance:

At last, the unveiling of YEN PLUS! The monthly manga anthology from Yen Press will be available on July 29th at major retailers nationwide. YEN PLUS will feature over 450 pages of the finest manga and manhwa for only $8.99 an issue! What's more, YEN PLUS will read both ways-left-to-right AND right-to-left.

Start from the right for the best Japanese manga from Square Enix:

* SOUL EATER by Atsushi Ohkubo
* NABARI NO OU by Yuhki Kamatani
* SUMOMOMO MOMOMO by Shinobu Ohtaka
* BAMBOO BLADE story by Masahiro Totsuka, art by Aguri Igarashi
* HIGURASHI WHEN THEY CRY story by Ryukishi07

Read left-to-right for Korean manhwa and original English-language manga:

* MAXIMUM RIDE story by James Patterson, art by NaRae Lee
* NIGHTSCHOOL by Svetlana Chmakova
* PIG BRIDE by KookHwa Huh and SuJin Kim
* JACK FROST by JinHo Ko

My only fear is with so many titles in one magazine, we might not get very speedy advances in storylines. On top of that, it's also twice the price of Shonen Jump. Hopefully, the manga will be good enough to warrant a buy. They're already offering subscriptions, and you can hit their site for more info. Hell, it can't do any worse then Raijin Comics...
