A Reignbow & Dee-Va Debut Review

Reignbow_and_Dee-va_Cover-3.gif

We can all agree that there is a severe lack of three dimensional gay representation in mainstream comics but that doesn't mean that gay characters in comics don't exist. As highlighted by the recent "Emerging LGBT Voices" panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con such voices are making waves especially in the indie comic world. One such emerging voice is Brian Andersen, the creator of So Super Duper. His latest project is Reignbow & Dee-Va, where a gay man and his best gal pal find more then they bargained for while out on the town.

For a review you need to jump.

What readers will be immediately struck by is the color. Where the art on So Super Duper is very cute but comic strippy, Reignbow & Dee-Va takes Andersen's unique voice to the next level. Thanks to the anime influenced art of co-creator and artist Celina Hernandez the characters interact in a more grounded surrounding and the action sequences have a great deal of life to them. The highlight is a full color splash page that I can't describe without giving things away but let's say mainstream gay comic book fans have been wanting to see something like that in the pages of DC or Marvel for years.

The story itself is light-hearted fun. Andersen makes no apologies for his lead characters, which might not be something all readers embrace but works for the story he is telling. The amusing duo thrive on their "night on the town that takes a convenient turn" in a way that would have been lost had the adventure been an actual mission. Tongue seems planted firmly in cheek especially during a few of the fights, one of which will make readers never look at fake eyelashes the same way again.

Reignbow & Dee-Va is worth a look and not just because supporting LGBT voices helps show the industry that some readers are looking for a little more diversity. It's a fun little tale of friendship and unexpected adventure that pops off the page.

I first fell in love with Reignbow and Dee-Va when I saw the uber-cute chibi teasers. The duo dynamic is great and the action sequences are hilarious!

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Northstar's Boyfriend Coming In January! You guys may recall I was a bit cranky about Northstar and his lack of lovin' about a year and a half ago. In fact, at the time, I issued a challenge to Marvel to get him a kiss by June 2009 or I would declare him not really gay. I have not forgotten about this. However, when the X-men moved to San Francisco this year, we were teased with the existence of what looked to be Northstar's boyfriend (and manager), so I delayed judgment until we could see more. Since then, Northstar hasn't had a lot of major appearances, as there have been about a thousand major crossover events in the Marvel universe in the last six months, and each one tends to disrupt the normal storyline for most books, including the many X-books. So I waited. Our patience seems to have been rewarded! Artist Tim Fish revealed on his blog that his upcoming story in Nation X #2 (which comes out in Jan.) is a story about Northstar, and will feature Kyle, his boyfriend in an 8-page story. I'm not sure if an actual kiss is in it, but it's implied that there is some lovin' going on. Check out some sketches of Northstar, Kyle, and Aurora below, and we'll keep you up to date when we get closer to Jan. NATION X #2 1/6/10 [TimFishWorks]...
