The Magical Threshold Of Tolerance (AKA I'm Quitting This Stupid Series)

threshold.jpg

I'm a sucker for debut issues. I make it a habit of grabbing new comics because I'm making an investment on the potential of the storyline. Sometimes, a comic doesn't have a very good first issue, but amazes and astonishes at some point later on. I have a pretty high threshold for allowing a series to impress me. That number is currently at around 3-4 issues: if a comic fails to grab my attention by then, it's time for me to move on.

This week, Trinity #3 came out, and I read it with the expectation that it would somehow morph into something more palatable for me. My review (which will be posted shortly) is not kind and I mentioned that this would be the last week I grab Trinity. That got me to thinking...what is the general tolerance out there for a new series? That is, how many issues do you hold out until you just give up on a title? While we're at it, what's the most recent title you've given up on and why?

Other than Trinity, I think Guardians of the Galaxy is another one I'm going to be dropping; not because of its lack of quality, I'm just not that interested in those characters at this point.

I'll usually give a book to the end of the first story. I'll wait and see if the opening arc can tie itself together well enough to make me interested in getting the next one. However, it's been known to happen that I can't stand the book at all and drop it before #6 (which is usually when then story ends these days).

Recently, I dropped X-Force and the (Red) Hulk because I just didn't care about what was coming in the next issue.

I'm with Goblin (swoons) about waiting out the first story. It will have to be pretty turrible to stop before that point.

I tend to treat new storylines and the changing of creative teams in the same way as well.

Well, Trinity I didn't give a shot at all since I was turned off by their other weeklies.

The last title I dropped was the latest New Warriors series. I didn't know who any of the characters were after 6 issues, which I thought was weird. then I read a few reviews and found it wasn't just me. The story seemed to be going nowhere. Which was a shame, it was a good idea.

I almost dropped The Flash. I wasn't a fan of Waid's return to the book, but Peyer's arc is keeping me interested, though just barely.

Title I should have dropped a long long time ago was Midnighter. When I found out it was ending I decided to stick it out to the end even though I really wasn't enjoying it at all.
