McFarlane To Actually Draw A Comic Book?!

WhilceSpawn2SM.JPG

I can honestly say I never thought I'd actually be reporting this, but word from Image Comics and their news division has it that baseball hoarding Todd McFarlane will actually be - gasp! - drawing a comic book again! And surprisingly, he will actually allow it to be sold this time.

Spawn #185 is due in October and will bear the names of McFarlance, Whilce Portacio and Brian Holguin as writers/artists. More than that we don't really know, but Image makes note to keep an eye on WizardWorld Chicago around the 28th of this month for more details.

I find it odd that Portacio did the cover and not Spawn's creator. And the fact that the press release does not say what McFarlane is actually doing on the book leads me to wonder what his involvement really is? I've never been a huge fan of his (yes, even his Spidey stuff - blasphemy, I know) so the less Todd the better for me.

You can make the "Art is better than writing" jump for the official press release and the full cover image which depicts Spawn doing something I with Todd McF would have done long ago.

Monday, June 9, 2008 TODD MCFARLANE AND WHILCE PORTACIO TAKE OVER SPAWN! Image founders take Spawn into an all-new direction!

This October, SPAWN returns to its roots as series creator Todd McFarlane and fellow Image Founder While Portacio take the reins in issue #185.

"While I'm very happy with where Spawn has gone, it's long past time to inject some new blood into the series while also returning to its roots," said McFarlane. "I feel what Whilce and I are doing with our co-writer, Brian Holguin, combines the old and the new in a way no one would have expected. That's a claim which gets tossed around quite a bit in the industry, but this one really changes everything."

Details on the new direction will roll out over the coming weeks, especially during the team's appearance at Wizard World Chicago, June 28. The convention will feature both signings and a panel delving into the plans for what's to come.

SPAWN #185, a 32-page comic book for $2.95, will be available in stores October 2008. For more on their Wizard World Chicago appearance, please see www.wizarduniverse.com. Further information about the SPAWN comic, and all things McFarlane, can be found at www.spawn.com

Wow. Maybe this means that McFarlane is actually trying to EARN some of those wads of money that he takes from the people that work for him ;)

I just have a question for everyone out there. How many people still read Spawn? I was a big fan of Todd Mcfarlane when I was a kid, and I freaking loved the spawn comic book. (I still have issues 1-100 lying around somewhere) I just really got tired of the series, and thought it went on a lot longer then it should have. In fact out of all the comic book geeks I know, I don't know anyone whose read the series in the last two years.

for research purposes...i don't read Spawn...only because it's a product of the early 90s and that's where it needs to stay :-)

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

DC Adding Gay Teenaged Legacy Heroes Manhunter is certainly going out with a bang! While the series may be coming to a close, it's given us a glimpse of what the future of DC may be like. Including the fact that Kate's son, Ramsey, is apparently going to be gay! And dating another legacy hero! Issue 37, which should be out in stores now, shows Ramsey, Kate, and crew about 15 years down the line. You can check out some scans over at Heroes 'N' Hunks. (Please note, this link is work safe but the rest of the site may not be)...
