Sensual Or Just Smut
Valerie D'Orazio over at her blog, The Occasional Superheroine, wonders if the latest Teen Titans cover is just a little too ... pornographic? Now, she's not saying it's a lewd picture or anything.Her major beef is more that we can plainly see the two characters' tongues outside of their mouths. It's an unnatural and awkward visual rarely seen outside of late night Cinemax Skinamax.
She talks about the cover and why it's actually more pornographic than the scantily clad women covers we're so used to. Then, she responds to a critic and goes into more detail.
It's an interesting discussion and is not as one-sided as it seems. I'm inclined to agree with Valerie in that there's no problem with two characters making out on a cover, but it seems kind of low class and porn fan fiction to have them acting like that. Of course, the fact that Nightwing is making out with a woman is gross enough for me, but still ...

The tongue thing isn't bothersome to me. What is bothersome is that they seem to be going back to the Starfire/Nightwing doomed romance thing when his romance with Oracle was so much more interesting. Oh, and I hate how Ian Churchill draws Starfire, that is the artist for this piece, right?
The tongues will be airbrushed out by the time the actual cover shows up in comic stores anyway. But thanks for sharing this story with us, Goblin.

I think I get gross vibes from the cover the same way people displaying heavy PDA in public next to me is uncomfortable. But then again, I can't gage it against other types of covers because I haven't had random superheroes doing action poses next to me or anything.

The way it's drawn it looks like they came in after and stuck in two little tan arcs that are touching tips.
An action, that in life, even the most horny of teens wouldn't find sexy or a turn on.
More importantly? What the hell is her eyebrow DOING there? It looks like it was given free will and disconnected from her face.
