NYC Comic Con: Catwoman Taking A Nap

catwoman.gif

It would seem that all the faith i was putting into an improved Catwoman title is for nothing. A friend called me this afternoon, and Newsarama is confirming, that Catwoman is soon no longer having her own book.

Now if this makes it so Catwoman can leap over to play with the Secret Six sign me up but otherwise I am sad to see this book go.

DAG NO!!

I've read every solo issue of Catwoman ever made and her comics have always been awesome. There was a brief lull with the series (both volumes) a few times, but otherwise it has been fantastic.

Frankly, I've always worried that she'd grow too big for her britches. As a defender, detective, and fighter she ranks a little too close to Batman perhaps for DC's comfort. That is, if she grew any bigger in her current role she'd really be infringing on Batman's territory. Add Oracle and the Birds to the mix (and Oracle finding occassional good uses for Catwoman) and the Bats could find himself on the wrong end of the Gotham ladies.

Not that Oracle hasn't already proven she can stand up to him on her own when she defended Huntress.

Agreed Connie.

It's frustrating that really, other than Wonder Woman, can't figure out how to keep a female lead comic going for long hauls. Look at the number of times Manhunter has been brought back.

I'm just hoping Catwoman's the new addition to the Secret Six because I'm not quite in the 'dig it' camp with the new writer on BOP. Although if she replaced Misfit then maybe...

I would much rather Gail sink her teeth into Catwoman if I can't have Catwoman as a monthly of her own anymore.

And what of Holly and Slam?

Well, Holly recently got some meta gifts from some goddess or whatnot with Harley, didn't she? I think that might have been in 52, where they had a bunch of random ladies.

Part of DC's issue, and I'm a big fan of the DC ladies, seems to be that the boys hold predominant territory. Metropolis has Superman, Gotham has Batman, Detroit has the Martian Manhunter...even Bludhaven has Nightwing.

Whenever they introduce a female character it seems that, with the exception of WW and Black Canary, she's impeding on territory already held by a man. In this is one section where Marvel actually has DC beat; women are some of their most classic and popular heroes. The X-men have had many predominant women who are not weaker, newer, or blander clones of their male counterparts and so on.

After Gail left it seems like the Birds are just sort of picking up all these random B-heroines and giving them a place to actually shine.

What they need is to girdle themselves and just give a lady an entire city to herself. To me, all the female comic heroines in DC seem to refer back to some other man. Like a spin-off. How many Catwoman comics were just portions or spin-offs of larger DC or Batman issues of which she wasn't a main player, just a cog in the wheel? Again, this excludes Birds of Prey, but Birds of Prey also seems to be the only female-fronted comic in DCU besides Wonder Woman that has any real shelf-life.
