Entertainment Weekly Asked How They Got Hooked

hook.gif

The Heroes story isn't the only comic news hitting EW.com today.

The magazine went to 15 of the industries most well-respected comic creators and asked them how they fell in love with comics. I was especially interested to hear from writers Alison Bechdel, Jim Lee, Brad Meltzer, Warren Ellis, and Gail Simone. I could have done without the added anecdote from Brian Michael Bendis.

Check out what some of them had to say and then let's hear what got you hooked.

I never really read comics until my freshman year in college. My roommate was an avid comic-reader, and I started reading his, then moved on to buying my own. That started a decades long love-hate relationship, wherein I would sometimes buy a dozen or more titles a week. I stopped reading like that back in the early 90's, when Marvel just HAD to squeeze that last dollar from my pocket for yet another lame crossover mess. I'm just starting to get back into it, but I admit to feeling a bit lost...all "my" old crowd of characters from the 80's are gone forever, and this new batch doesn't seem nearly as fun.

I used to sell comics at an open air market in Milton Keynes (believe it or not). Aside from my obsession with the Titans (Titans Hunt was just being released, date me now) what I learned was that to drink coffee at an open air market requires that you do not trust the milk, so you drink it black. That's what comics did for me.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
