And You Thought Brand New Day Was Bad?

t_AntiVenom.jpg

Seriously, what the hell is Marvel thinking in regards to Spider-Man these days?

After the hum-drum story in One More Day, we got the terrible Brand New Day along with its "Let's Go Back to the 1970s!" status quo. Aside from the idiocy with which the change occurred, its regressed Peter as a character back to a post-high school child. Well done!

I've been collecting Spider-Man for more years than I can recall, but I'm getting close to dropping the line's once flagship and current only title, Amazing Spider-Man. It just does nothing for me anymore. It's always the last I read each week if I even read it. I've still got a stack of books from weeks past that I haven't gotten to and there are several copies of ASM in there somewhere. And i just don't care, sadly.

But in an effort to make everything seem new but really just retread old plot devices (which, cynically, appears to be the modus operandi behind Brand New Day) we've got a new character coming called - I kid you not - Anti-Venom.

Come on people, come up with something NEW.

To learn all about this new Venom rip-off and get a sneak preview of Spidey's summer storyline hit the Symbiote Jump.

From EW. com:

There comes a time when even a storied supervillain needs a do-over, and that moment has arrived for Spider-Man arch-nemesis Venom. Well, sorta. The extraterrestrial symbiote -- which most famously glommed onto embittered Spider-friend Eddie Brock -- is classically depicted as a onyx-colored, cuspated shape-shifter. But Marvel decided the dude needed to lighten up, so they created an additional symbiote as a visual foil to their old standby: Here's your first glimpse at the new, angelically hued...Anti-Venom.

What the heck's an Anti-Venom? We'll find out when The Amazing Spider-Man No. 568 -- the first of a pivotal six-issue arc called ''New Ways to Die,'' written by Dan Slott (Avengers: The Initiative) and illustrated by John Romita Jr. (Daredevil: The Man Without Fear) -- hits stores in August.

That's all well and good, but we've had the Anti-Venom for 15 years. We all him Carnage. Do we really need another symbiote running around? What's old is new again ... or that's what they want us to think, it would seem. I'm going to at least hope that this new inverted Eddie Brock wannabe will be a result of the new villain Mr. Negative.

Anti-Venom will be premiering as a part of the "New Ways to Die" storyline in ASM. For a quick preview of that arc, let's head back to EW.com:

There are still more changes afoot in the Spidey-verse. Take a gander at EW.com's other exclusive first look -- a collage teasing revealing ''scenes'' (also drawn by the esteemed Romita Jr.) from additional Amazing Spider-Man issues, these hitting stores starting in June. Frenemy Eddie Brock, possibly still cancer-ridden, is back, as is Norman Osborn, better known as mad-genius nemesis the Green Goblin. Meanwhile, on the home front, Mary Jane Watson is in the house, so to speak. You may recall that she split from her Spidey sweetheart in a confused Faustian bid with Mephisto -- the couple's memory erased! -- to save sweet Aunt May's life in last year's ''One More Day'' storyline. A tangled web? We'll say! -- Nisha Gopalan

Now, I am very glad to see Romita Jr. back on a book. I think his style is perfect for Webhead and conversely, his style does not work for any given titles. If JRjr stayed on Amazing Spider-Man until he retired I'd be fine with that. Keeping JRjr on ASM and Stuart Immonen on Ultimate Spider-Man gives you just about the perfect pair of Spider-Artists to date.

But I digress. This die-hard Spider-Man fan just doesn't understand what the house of Ideas is doing with their flagship character. Not everyone will love every idea, I get that. But this? Really? I just don't get it at all.

Here's hoping I can break the addiction soon.

I realize you guys need to cover this trainwreck for the sake of comic journalism, but it seems like a lot of people are both buying this and complaining about it. If you really hate Brand New Day all that much, speak with your money and just stop buying the damn thing.

I think that our coverage and opinion of ASM is directly proportional to the coverage and BS Marvel keeps spewing out...so the universe balances out :-)

@ Mudd:

Well, for one, we have to read the book to know whether or not we don't like it.

As for myself, I've been collecting Spidey for so long it's hard to stop for any amount of time. As I said, I'm considering it and this point I'm giving it until the end of this just announced "New Ways to Die" arc. If it doesn't get better by then, I will no longer be buying Amazing Spider-Man.

So you're going to start anti-reading that book now?

(my apologies)

I've been spending my money on it for the past few weeks...
