The Fantastic Four Are Dead

fantastic3.jpg

No, the Mole Man didn't eat them (yet). Chris Evans, who really brought the Human Torch to life, has stated that he believes the FF franchise is through. While he's not definitive, he said that right after the first movie FOX was talking abot a sequel and throwing out script ideas. After the second one, FOX has been silent and it's been up to Michael Chiklis (the Thing) and Jessica Alba (Invisible Woman) to spur on rumors and offer up script possibilities.

While his news is hardly concrete, it does have an air of truth to it. Hollywood rarely lets this much time go by before starting work on a sequel these days. Marvel's first family may be dead in the water until a Hollywood remake comes along in twenty or thirty years.

Check out the jump for all the details Evans' statements from the MTV Movie Blog (how the hell do they get all of these items, they're friggin' MTV!) as well as Evans doing a little badmouthing of his co-stars.

From the MTV Movie Blog:

Now they're ready to hang it up based on a little negative criticism?

"I'm pretty sure we won't do [another] one," insisted "Fantastic Four" star Chris Evans, who excelled in two films as the Human Torch. "I'm assuming that one is a closed book."

What gives? In recent months, both Jessica Alba and Michael Chiklis have expressed a strong desire to come back for "FF3," each one even going so far as to offer up a preferred storyline.

Sure, Franklin Richards or The Puppet Master would be cool. It's not the storylines that worries Evans, he insists, it's the fact that they have to offer it up the storylines at all, he told MTV News.

"After the first one was released we got wind of potential titles and plots [almost immediately], and I've heard nothing from anyone at Fox [yet]," he grumbled. "We had all planned on doing [another] one but if there were going to be a third I think a week after the second one was released we would have heard."

It might be for the best. When we spoke with Evans in June, he acknowledged the failings of the first two movies, but said he still thought the franchise's "potential has not been reached."
"I still think this can be something great, and I think we are getting closer," he said at the time. ""I think that if ["FF2″] does ok and people respond with the appreciation of a more serious tone, hopefully [with] the third one we can inch closer to a legitimate cast and a legitimate film."

Now Evans -- who will next be seen with Keanu Reeves in the cop drama "Street Kings" -- is singing a different tune, confessing that he's "ready to walk away" from the role that made him a household name.

"It takes up a lot of time. It's a big commitment," he said. "I'm happy with walking away."

Still, Evans confessed that he does want to leave the door a little ajar, citing Marvel's recent success with character cross-pollination. If "Spider-Man" or "Hulk" came to him with a cameo, he's be the first on board.

"Absolutely," he enthused. "If Johnny Storm wanted to make a pop in appearance in one of those movies that would be a treat."

What do you make of Evans' revelations? Are you holding out hope for another "Fantastic Four"? Or, like me, do you think they're just, well, a little too silly. Good news or bad news - FLAME ON!/blockquote>

You got my hopes up there.
I despise the FF in all its forms.
Though I must say, that the only thing good to come out of the franchise have been the plethoria of shirtless screencaps of Chris Evans I've seen on the net.
While I'm fairly opposed to a Johnny Storm cameo in Spiderman based on my belief that the whole Spiderman/Human Torch friendship in the comics is one of the most unrealistic annoying relationships in comics (I'm also looking at you Iceman/Mystique), the idea of having total hunks like Tobey Maguire and Chris Evans playing opposite eachother in tight bodyhugging costumes and maybe having a shirtless scene together for comedy (amongst other things) value is getting me somewhat exited.

The Fantastic Four were my favorite superhero team as a child, and I still like reading their old adventures. As excited as I was to see their story hit the big screen, I have to say that both of the FF movies totally sucked [even worse than the current run of the FF comics.] I really hope they don't make another awful movie.

While there was certainly more wrong with the two films than right, I didn't think they should have been written off completely. I'm going to hold out hope for a Hulk-esque mini-revamp in the future.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
