The Pulse: Action Comics

The Pulse is a new feature of ours where we'll check the pulses of our favorite titles that may have escaped the radar during our regular reviews. We'll take a closer look to check the health of a title, and what can be done to fix it. Just because they're not up on Thursday for review doesn't mean we aren't glued to their pages. So without any further ado, let's check up on that extremely old favorite, Action Comics.

The pages of Action Comics lately have been some of the most exciting since the first issue that introduced the world to Superman way back in 1939. Plus, Colossal Boy is super-hot in it.
Since issue #859, Action Comics readers have been re-introduced (for what seems like the hundredth time) to the Legion of Super-Heroes. But this time, writer Geoff Johns and penciller Gary Frank have reshaped the Legion in what is arguably one of the best Superman/Legion storylines ever. In the months since the release of issue #859, fans have witnessed yet another retconned version of DC's prominent 30th-century superteam of teens and 20somethings, but these heroes, reshaped in the scope of current DC continuity and through the lens of of a changing universe, are the most surprisingly refreshing versions of the team to date. Unlike their '90s revamped counterparts, many of the heroes have the classic names we're used to--instead of Live Wire or Leviathan, we once again have Lightning Lad and Colossal Boy. But the similarities end there: this team is even darker than their counterparts of the '90s, the storyline itself beginning in a much more dangerous time than the idyllic 30th century with which most DC fans will be familiar.
Readers quickly learn that the Earth of this 30th century has shunned most Legion members, specifically those not born of Earth or one of its colonies. The future of the Legion is solely in the hands of Earth-born members Dawnstar, Wildfire, and Colossal Boy. When Superman arrives from the past to offer help, he soon learns a terrible truth: not only has Earth's newfound animosity towards alien races crippled the Legion, the Legion's enemies have spread said global hatred based on the premise that Superman himself was an Earthling, a seductive lie that has forced Earth against the Legion. And it doesn't help that in this future, the sun's radiation is no longer yellow, but red, reducing Superman to a powerless intruder himself. And behind it all? A warped version of the 30th century's Justice League, composed of rejected Legionnaires and former members of the "Legion of Substitute Heroes", including Absorbing Boy (now Earth-Man), Spider-Girl, Storm Boy, Golden Boy, and Radiation Roy.
But perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of this Legion revamp lies not in the unparalleled writing talent of Mr. Johns, but in the spectacular art of Gary Frank. Not only do the Legion, for the first time in this reviewer's humble opinion, look like real people for once, but his guys are HOT. Okay, it may seem odd to find illustrated characters attractive, and especially the usually campy-looking Legion, but from the first panel of Colossal Boy ripping the roof off a building, one can't help but notice his dreamy blue eyes, chiseled jaw, and seductively stubbled chin. Or at least I noticed it. And initially almost taken aback with my sudden attraction to almost all of the male members of the Legion, I withheld such opinions until after my boyfriend picked up the first issue and said something remotely akin to, "Damn, Colossal Boy is hot!" So, with apologies to Mr. Frank for not particularly addressing the majority of his skill and instead focusing on the masculine attractiveness of his version of the Legion, I must say he draws one super-hot Colossal Boy, Lightning Lad, Cosmic Boy, Timber Wolf, and even the villainous Earth-Man, and I frankly can't wait to see some more of the Legion as the storyline approaches its end.

Yup I concur...Colossal Boy is superhot and don't you love Lightning Lad's new costume...you'd think he was dressing for Cosmic Boy not Saturn Girl....hot and yummy...

Man, it's about time someone agreed with me. I was starting to think I was the only one getting strangely excited every time a new issue comes out.
