LGBT Characters Of The Week: Hazel And Foxglove

FoxgloveHazel.jpg

LGBT Character of the Week is fashionably late this week by about... *cough*seven days*cough*... so to make up for it we're doing a twofer!

Hazel and Foxglove hail from the pages of The Sandman. In fact, at one point they lived in the same building as previous Character of the Week, Wanda Mann. After the traumatic events in that book (now collected in 'A Game Of You'), they move in with Hazel's mother and Foxglove starts a very successful music career.

We catch up with them later during relationship troubles in Death: The High Cost Of Living and Death: The Time Of Your Life. These books detail their encounters with Morpheus' sister, Death. After this, they move to an undisclosed suburban area to raise their son, Alvie (aww, named after Wanda). This also makes them two of the VERY few gay characters to get a happy ending in comics.

I love Hazel and Foxglove. Death: The Time of Your Life is genius.

For some reason until about a month ago I had completely missed reading Death: Time of Your Life. But I've got it now (and I can't wait for Death to get the Absolute treatment). A Game of You was my first introduction to The Sandman (had to write a paper for a lit class in college on controversial topics in comic books and did it on vigilante-ism in The Dark Night returns, sexuality in The Sandman "A Game of You", and homophobia and AIDS in Alpha Flight #106). I'm glad to know that Wanda's already gotten the nod, and it's nice to see Hazel and Foxglove get the nod.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
