Entertainment Weekly Covers The Invasion

The Entertainment Weekly website is one of my daily stops so imagine my surprise today when I noticed some great Marvel comic coverage. I shouldn't be too surprised as Entertainment Weekly has been very comic book inclusive in the past but this somehow felt like a big deal.
It seems that they got the exclusive first peek at Secret Invasion.
Keeping in mind I am generally considered a DC fan, whose Marvel fandom is limited to Runaways, Exiles (the Judd Winick years), and a few of the X-Men titles, I have to say, as a newbie to this high concept event, I am pretty impressed. Granted reviewing a book on a few pages is sort of like reviewing an episode of Lost with only 15 minutes to go on but thus far it has me interested in reading more.
The art has a great deal of depth and the plot, as it is being laid out, seems rich with mystery as well as giant character ramifications.
I suppose my one complaint is that the entire concept of a Skrull invasion feels a little like a certain genius Sci-Fi Channel series that returns to air next week. Then again, haven't all the great ideas in the world been stolen from somewhere else?
Not only does EW offer a sneak peek at the book but also an interview with Brian Michael Bendis where he gives some interesting insight into the ideas behind the story as well as some hints of what's to come.

Now can some Marvel fan, after reading the preview, explain to someone who has never 'sat through' a Marvel event what this means for the characters who might be Skrulls. Bendis himself is vague about it but does this mean that said Skrull reveal #1 has been a Skrull since the character was revived?
Peh. Doubt it means anything. If One More Day is considered a far reaching event with repercussions and all that, then I don't hold any hopes for this being anything more than some skrulls showed up a couple months ago and have been impersonating people for whatever cliche villian scheme that bendis thinks is appropriate.
Since in Ms Marvel this week it's sort of semi revealed that the skrulls havn't really replaced everyone- they just have been using their look for whatever reason.
Then for the next year afterward writers are going to be asked to toss in the occasional "what if he's a leftover skrull" storyline.
There will probably be one or two "big" reveals... well "big" like Goliath, a crappy character we don't care about, getting killed in Civil War.
Oh yeah and "Super Skrull X Man" a skrull with all the powers ofthe X Men seems like a really bad Omen.
Ten bucks says we're gonna get Avengers Skrull and Runaways Skrull and Defenders Skrull and Spider Skrull and Symbiote Skrull.....
BLEH!
Well, technically, we have a Runaways Skrull already. : )
I have 'lived' through many a DC universe event but this Marvel event stuff is new to me. I have always skipped them in the past.
Considering the shapeshifting that we have seen go on in Runaways I'm just hoping Skrull review #1 doesn't mean that the real deal is really gone AGAIN!
I used to collect said character's book, after their most recent return, and hate the idea of said character gone for good - even though they were once gone before.
I actually mean that we'll see a skrull with all the powers of the Runaways.
Got it : )
