Venom Film In The Works

I'm not entirely sure why moviemakers think that poorly-developed characters from bad movies are worthy of their own film franchise (the Silver Surfer anyone?), but Marvel certainly seems to be heading down that path. The latest example of this is Eddie Brock, AKA Venom, who we last saw in the crappy Spider-Man 3... when we saw him get blown up in a fairly escape-proof method. But that's not stopping Marvel from shopping a spin-off movie based on Brock and his pet symbiote around, according to IESB:
Venom fans rejoice, Marvel is moving forward with a new stand alone film, yep you heard right, Venom is coming back to the big screen. We've confirmed that "the studio" has met recently with several "A list writers" about a spin-off film.
Eight years ago, New Line Cinema held the theatrical rights to Venom. Since then, the rights have reverted back Marvel. But does Sony have complete control over the character since he was a part of Spidey 3 or does Marvel control the rights to the character with Sony only having distribution rights?
While Venom isn't exactly my favorite character, I felt that he was really poorly written in the latest Spidey flick. I mean, seriously, I don't think I've ever met someone who's simultaneously that socially clueless yet capable of being such a backstabbing weasel. And, honestly, what was up with him asking for God to kill Peter Parker? Sorry, I'm getting off-subject here.
Anyway, my only hope is that -maybe this time- the writing for the film won't suck eggs and most of us won't feel robbed of our ten bucks when we walk out of the local cineplex.

Frater Mine by Sean McGrath and Juan Romera
Venom's one of my favourite Marvel characters, especially in his current role in the Thunderbolts. Warren Ellis is doing some really interesting things with the characters.
Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
