The New Doctor Is In

IDW released its latest licensed title this week with the debut of Doctor Who #1. Featuring the Tenth Doctor, in the rendered form of actor David Tennant, and his companion Martha Jones the debut is a gentle introduction to the Doctor and marks the first time his adventures have been created strictly for the US comic book market. Written by Gary Russell, whose day job places him as the story editor for the Who television series, each issue will serve as a standalone tale that, like the TV show, will have ramifications as the comic book mini-series draws to it’s conclusion.
Readers unfamiliar with the Tardis or the sonic screwdriver can jump right in thanks to good exposition and fans of Russell T. Davies Doctor will recognize little nods to the series like the first issues adversary. The art is similar in style to other licensed IDW titles like Angel and Transformers. The one downside of the book is it perhaps skews a little younger in content to what a US audience for a Who comic might like.
The series is the second Doctor Who title at IDW. Back in December Doctor Who Classics #1 was released and sold well enough to garner a second printing this week.
Will the adventures of the Doctor and his companion resonate with comic book fans in the US? More importantly will a successful Doctor Who comic series lead to the Torchwood team and it’s leader Captain Jack following the Doctor onto the comic book pages?

ugh, Martha Jones. such a rebound companion.
Couldn't agree more. It was a way to drag more Who people to Torchwood - she was planned to join Torchwood from the word go on Who
