Sometimes TV Makes Me Want To Cry

I stopped watching Smallville a couple of years ago when... well, crap, when was it? Oh, right, when that medieval witch ended up possessing Lana. Apparently the show's just gone downhill since then, as witnessed by my friends and I last night when we decided to check out the addition of Black Canary to the rotating cast of twenty-something vigilantes in the Junior Lifeguards of America show's version of the Justice League.
I always kind of liked Black Canary, to be honest, partially due to her retro style and costume. Not only that, but she had a kind of interesting power on top of being a total badass. Oh, and she almost always seemed to look classy, which is not a word I often use for a lot of superheroines these days.
Needless to say, last night's rendition of the woman made me want to cry. Well, not really, but you get the idea. Corporate saboteur? Angry young woman? Warpaint? What the hell were you people thinking? Dinah Lance is not some punk-rock video reject, and she is certainly a lot more likable in the comics.
However, after we sat there and groaned our way through the episode, one of our crew pointed out that this was still a better representation of her than what appeared in that celluloid abortion that was Birds of Prey. Well, maybe next time she can just not be irritating, and then after that she might even be likable.

Frater Mine by Sean McGrath and Juan Romera
That makes me think "Bladerunner Homage" more than "War Paint"..
I watched this because I love Black Canary. I could have even been okay with the costume if she wasn't so stupid and annoying. Why was she a conservative talk show host? Was there any thought that went into that decision? And her weird matrix-esque fighting style? Not cool. She's an awesome fighter without her Canary Cry, and she doesn't need to defy gravity to do it. And her wig was dorky. And Ollie and Clark convinced her that she was on the wrong side too easily. I mean, I didn't like that she was working for Lex at all, but she still could have taken some convincing.
At least she beat Ollie and Clark. I might have cried if she didn't.
