LGBT Character Of The Week: Obsidian

250px-Obsidianprince.jpg

Black goes with everything, not to mention it's very slimming. Obsidian is an expert on the subject. From the pages of my favorite comic, Green Lantern, Todd Rice has the power to merge his body with his own shadow, giving him enhanced strength and vitality. As a shadow, he can fly, as well as envelop enemies, showing them their dark side. He has also shown other shadow-related abilities at times, due to his connection to the Shadowlands as the source of his powers.

Todd is the twin brother to fellow superhero Jade, (who died earlier this year). They are both the children of Golden Age Green Lantern and villain Thorn. The siblings founded Infinity, Inc.

Unfortunately, along with his powers, also inherited his mothers potential for mental illness, Combined with manipulations from villain Ian Karkull, this led to him being a villain himself for a brief period of time. After his defeat, he retires from the hero business and in that time comes to terms with the fact that he is gay. He met and fell in love with Damon Matthews, an associate of Manhunter.

Obsidian recently returned to being a superhero, and works as a guard for the Justice Society, He is still happily dating Damon.

Comic of the Week

Hey Look Who Showed Up! It's Northstar! Finally! I'm now convinced that I have the mutant power to start talking about something right before it happens, as I was talking about Northstar just last week. I'll call it my 'Foot in Mouth' powers. Anyway, for those who haven't grabbed books this week, I highly recommend you pick up Uncanny X-men #508, as it brings Northstar back to the team. We discover he's been living it up as a famous snowboarder in Canada, with a boyfriend apparently. Wolverine recruits him and his sister for the team. There is some fantastic dialogue that I won't spoil at this point since it just came out, but it's very well written, so thanks should go out to Mr. Matt Fraction. Based on what happens I have a sneaking suspicion that it was written to clear up some of the angst surrounding Northstar's treatment in the last few years. So now we've seen Northstar with a love interest, can a kiss be far behind? Will it make it in time for Pride month? We'll see. Go read it!...
