We Just Can't Stop Hating "One More Day"

applegeeksquesada.jpg

We really can't say enough bad things about the "One More Day" story arc in Spider-Man's life. No, seriously, we've tried to stop a few times and had relapses as soon as we start thinking of Dear Ol' Spidey. Well, guess what? We're not the only ones having a problem letting go of our hatred.

This little gem comes from AppleGeeks Lite, and we couldn't agree with their opinion more.

This is kinda an outside opinion, as I am only vaguely familiar with the "one more day" thing/uproar and I dont read spiderman much anyways, but I think there comes a time when you have to accept the fact that a comic has to either end or be reset. The alternatives to this are not terribly attractive, to have a character trapped in formula that gets repeated over and over despit the passage of time, or that your characters are going to change over time and what worked as a storyline years ago, doesnt work now.

Personally I love the x-men, but the tangle of ridiculous continuity can be tiresome, and at times I wish they would just end it or move beyond what the x-men were. I would be sad to see them go, but at the same time I would be happy if something new and related to them took their place. With such iconic characters (spiderman, superman, ect)this can be difficult, but at what point do you say it needs to end or change? Because at some point it has to.

Erik is right about need to "reboot" or end a series, but this feels so forced and implausible.

I thought the Ultimate line was supposed to give new and different avenues to take classic characters without impacting the normal continuity. This kind of change is just so wonky.

I can understand, and agree with what you're saying in general, but it takes the right kind of story to pull off a Reboot that works in a really good way.

All you really need in order to do it without pissing off your entire fanbase is a modicum of finesse.

For example, as a long-time X-men fan, I was willing to accept House of M and it's repercussions for the mutant community, and I enjoy where they've taken the story. While I too am something of a Spiderman Outsider, I really don't get the impression that OMD accomplishes the task it set out to do in a way that the fans are willing to accept. For the most part, I haven't really heard people complain (too much) about the desire to get Peter Parker out of married life, so much as I've heard complaints about how JQ set about doing it.

In short, it's not so much the fact that Spiderman got a reboot, as how they rebooted him that really ticks people off.

it is unfortunate that the reboot didnt go over so well, or at least that it is getting a really negative fan reaction. Having an ending/reboot that is a disaster is really terrible. Its a different medium but I remember watching the Enterprise finale and being utterly horrified by how awful it was. I just feel that there comes a time to end a story, and alot of comics go on and on forever, and I think that kind of ruins them. Even if you do pull off a successful reboot, how many times are you gonna pull that off? When do you say enough is enough?

I am a fan of the Ultimate marvel lines because of their freedom from decades of continuity. Though the House of M thing struck me more as a "cleaning house" kinda event, rather than a reboot, but that is just a manner of how you define a reboot.
