Uncanny X-men's Future In Doubt?

uncanny495.jpg

Marvel is making some rather ominous claims regarding their Uncanny X-Men comic, claiming “the Uncanny X-Men are no more”. I have yet to bother with the whole Messiah Complex storyline, mainly because I’ve been too busy spending my money on books that I actually enjoy.

However, does this claim mean that Marvel (and a certain Editor-in-Chief whom we just love to bits) is going to cancel one of its longest-running series and reboot it? Seeing as how the series is fast-approaching issue #500, it’s entirely possible… but I really hope not. I’m getting sick and tired of that trend, particularly after all that Heroes Reborn nonsense.

In the wake of Messiah CompleX’s jaw-dropping conclusion, the X-Men are no more—but where do Xavier’s former students go from here? In Uncanny X-Men #495, from Eisner-winning author Ed Brubaker and rising star artist Michael Choi, the surviving mutants must reassess Xavier’s dreams and decide if peaceful coexistence is still an option. An X-Men: Divided We Stand tie-in, this issue sets the stage for mutantkind’s future and while former allies are mourned, is the world truly safer? Meanwhile, Iron Man confronts Cyclops with a plan for ensuring the safety of all mutants—but will he agree?

Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on Uncanny X-Men #495 and all X-Men: Divided We Stand tie-ins, as all X-titles continue to sell out at Diamond and buzz keeps growing around this bold new direction for the X-Men! The only thing that’s certain for Cyclops and his allies is that a world without X-Men will be unlike anything you’ve seen before—and it all begins in Uncanny

While the overall quality of the Messiah Complex crossover has been well above my expectations, I'm a little miffed at the transition from "this new mutant birth is the most significant thing ever. All mutants must be involved!" to the apparent, "there's no need for X-Men so let's disband" mindset. Maybe the transition will be explained, but as it stands it doesn't make much sense. Aside from that, the stories that've come out of this crossover have been top notch. Even the ones that involve the King of Overexposure- Wolverine.

Best,
Gavin
