Ultimate Human #1 Is Gone, Baby, Gone

ultimatehuman.jpg

I'm not sure I'm all that huge a fan of Marvel's Ultimate Human comic, mainly because I'm still not sure about what it's trying to accomplish. I also was a little disappointed at the twist involving The Leader, mainly because I feel like it does one of my favorite characters a bit of injustice.

However, Marvel was pleased as punch to let us know that the series' first issue is completely sold out, and they also have no plans to actually reprint it. So, you know what this means: it's time to mug your friend who bought the comic and then run for the hills while he bleeds into the gutter.

Hit the jump for the press release.

Marvel is pleased to announce that Ultimate Human #1 (of 4), featuring a pivotal meeting between Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, has sold out at Diamond (though copies may be available at the retail level). As a desperate Banner holds out hope that Stark, better known as Iron Man, can cure him of his transformation into the grey gargantuan known as the Hulk, shadowy forces are at work to sabotage the experiment—and this issue ends with plenty of smashes to come! The acclaimed creative team of award-winning author Warren Ellis and superstar artist Cary Nord have drawn praise from all corners, with Adam Chapman of Comixtreme.com deeming it “highly recommended… quite an inspired bit of writing.”

“As Tony Stark would say, it’s a pretty simple equation,” explained editor Bill Rosemann. “Smart writing + awesome art + compelling characters = another Ultimate hit.”

The ultimate collision between Iron Man and the Hulk continues in Ultimate Human #2 as Stark and Banner must deal with the “incredible” results of their experiments—and you better believe the Hulk will smash!

Please note that Marvel currently has no plans to go back to press on Ultimate Human #1.

I'm fairly certain the "point" to the book is to have a trade available to the masses this summer when both the Iron Man and Hulk films come out. Putting it in the Ultimate Universe nixes some of the baggage going on with Iron Man (Extremis, SHIELD, Initiative) and Hulk (Aftersmash, IncREDible).

That said, the issue wasn't bad. I'll alwys give Ellis the benefit of the doubt and while this may not be reinventing the wheel, it's got some interesting ideas in it. I'll ride it thru to the end.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
