These Are The Moments...

crisis12.jpg

Whenever you assemble a "Greatest Moments Of" list, you run the risk of having people disagree with you. When the list is on a subject as subjective as, say, comic books, you run the risk of having a bunch of rabid fanboys howling for your blood because you overlooked their favorite moment. Over at The HUB, Mike Mumah presented his top "5 significant comic book moments", most of which are a bit older and probably won't make much of an impact with readers under the age of 25.

The top five comics for their significant moments are as follows:

1. "Crisis on Infinite Earths #12" (DC Comics)

2. "West Coast Avengers Giant-sized Annual #2" (Marvel Comics)

3. "The Dark Knight Returns #4" (DC Comics)

4. "The Uncanny X-Men #256" (Marvel Comics)

5. "Preacher #54" (DC Comics)

While I'm not going to deny that the moments Murnah describes were auspicious in their own right, a couple of them seem relatively obscure. West Coast Avengers? Really? I couldn't stand that comic when it was popular. And, not to knock Preacher #54, but there were some much stronger moments in the series (such as when, I don't know, God himself was assassinated).

Personally, I would've added some more recent/mainstream events to the list: X-Men Chronicles #1, which kicked off the superb Age of Apocalypse events; the entirety of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series (too many good moments to choose just one); and, finally, The Boys #1 for the way it turned the superhero mythos squarely on its head. But that's just me... what about you? What moments would you have included on such a list?

Comic of the Week

Review: Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1 I literally clapped my hands together and said OhMyGodYesssss when the friendly staff member at my regular shop held this book out to hand it to me. Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung finally - finally - return to this title with a nine issue limited series. I will spare you paragraphs of pontification and cut to the chase: it's not just good, it's the best thing Marvel has going, period. Read on for the pontification and petty quibbles!...
