Origins & Endings

One of the things I've always loved about DC Comics' Vertigo imprint is that they usually see their series through to their intended ends. What I love even more is that many of these series have one writer all the way through and are thus able stick to a fairly cohesive storyline that was intended from the beginning. Such were the cases with Sandman, 100 Bullets, and Lucifer. Now, Y: The Last Man is being added to the list of finished series, as the comic's double-sized final issue will hit shelves on January 30 and is set to wrap up all of the series' loose ends. Y's creator, Brian K. Vaughan, has reassured his fans that:
Love or hate it, the upcoming final issue of Y: THE LAST MAN ends the series exactly the way this impoverished, couchsurfing, 20-something boy set out to end it when he nervously pitched the laughable concept to Karen Berger and Heidi MacDonald…two women without whose trust and vision this series never would have seen the light of day.
I only recently started to get into Y, at the recommendation of a friend who knew I enjoyed Vertigo titles. I like it so far, mainly because I enjoy seeing what talented writers do with the "rebuilding after the end of the world" scenario and Vaughan has done a nifty job of crafting together a planet full of women who have formed into an odd civilization that is both functional and insane all at once. It reminds me of a more playful version of Children of Men, and I'm curious to see how the series progresses and -of course- wraps things up. More importantly, though, it makes me happy that Vaughan himself is happy with how the series is ending... now let's just hope they don't screw the movie up.
