LGBT Character Of The Week: Sunfire 2109
This weeks character hails from an alternate universe, not unlike Ultimate Colossus. Mariko Yashida, also known as Sunfire, is a mutant from Universe #2109. Mariko's counterpart in the primary 616 universe was a cousin to the heroes Sunfire and SunPyre, but in the 2109 universe she has powers similar to their own, the ability to absorb sunlight, and convert it into superheated plasma which bursts into flame on contact with the air.
Mariko was disconnected from her timeline however, and ended up on the reality-hopping group The Exiles. During her time with the Exiles she develops a friendship with teammate Morph and falls in love with the Spider-Woman of a world dealing with a variant of the Legacy Virus. Eventually she was killed saving a crowd of people from falling debris.
The run of Exiles featuring Mariko's coming-out was penned by none other than Judd Winnick.
