Justifying Recent Captain America Weirdness

Cap33cvr.jpg

I have to say that I was pretty unimpressed by Captain America #33, in part because of the fact that I was hoping someone more entertaining than Bucky/Winter Soldier would take over Steve Roger's place in the Cap role and also because the whole fight between him and Tony Stark just seemed ridiculous. I don't know, but I have yet to be impressed with the death of a major comic character because the following storylines always seem hokey and they always end up coming back in the end. Remember Superman's death? And that of Colossus? And Jamie Madrox? And don't even get me started on Jean Grey.

Anyway, Ed BruBaker sat down with Newsarama and discussed the events of the most recent issue, which I felt was him trying to pass off its ho-humness as brilliance. Case in point:

NRAMA: Very true – although he’s been in the background for a while now…

Okay - honest confession time, since you brought Bucky back in 2005, you're written some fairly cool scenes with him...having him, effectively, take out a significant chunk of a Helicarrier...as this story unspooled, was that sequence something you were champing at the bit for?

EB: Not really. I knew how he'd get to Tony, I knew the robot arm would take out the scientists and crawl into the air ducts, and I knew it would not be a smack-down of epic proportions, but figuring out that fight was surprisingly difficult, and Steve really made it look more exciting. The problem being, Tony really didn't want to fight Bucky, and Bucky is beating up a suit of armor, basically, that's trying to talk to him. So it's a weird scene. I was really happy with the final moments of the choreography, where he gets his helmet open and knocks him over, because that was the moment I'd always seen in my head.

I dunno, Barry Allen, Ted Kord, and Ralph Dibney were all pretty well done.

Oh, called it. Still upset at the new costume, but if anyone should become Cap after Cap dies, it should be Bucky.

Its still odd that the person to take over the killed off captain america is someone that was looked at as never returning from death. At least Bucky's character is more interesting than Jason Todd. Haven't reallly heard too much about him playing any significant role in the Bat universe after his return.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Review: Stormwatch #1 Stormwatch #1, the first of DC's new 52 to feature LGBT characters (before the reboot, at least) is out to add a new cosmic dimension to the post-Flashpoint universe. There isn't much to be said for our beloved broship yet (though the last page shows a handshake between Apollo and Midnighter and promises a "Big Bang"), but the issue is a great gauge for whether or not you'll want to stick with the series to see the romance purportedly unfold....
