Jason Statham = Namor?

namor.jpg

Namor the Submariner is one of those characters who I've never found particularly interesting. Don't get me wrong, he's a nifty supporting character, but he never comes across as terribly likable whenever he makes an appearance in the comic world. To me, the guy is like Doctor Strange: he's useful as an extra plot device and can work in a team environment, but he's just not really capable of carrying his own book.

Apparently, though, there's a movie in the works based on Prince Namor, and Jason Statham was in talks to play the lead...

IESB: Are there any comic book characters that you’d like to play in a film?

Statham: Yeah, absolutely. That’d be another area of my wishlist. I’d love to play one, yeah.

IESB: Anyone in particular?

Statham: Let me think… It’s funny, I took a meeting for Sub-Mariner. I don’t know if I’d look right running around in a tight speedo with wings on my ankles but there’s so many cool fucking characters. The Hulk, I’ve always been a big fan of but Ed Norton’s doing that. And rightly so. He’s fucking amazing. And he’s working with Louis Leterrier, believer it or not who did The Transporter. I’m trying to think of what would be a good comic book character for me to play. You know, there’s talk of them redoing The Crow. That was a good movie with Brandon Lee, although that was years ago. So if that one comes my way, bang! You know, there’s so many comic book movies out there and most of the time there’s only a handful of people who can do them any justice. Hopefully, they’ll come my way for one of them.

Don't get me wrong: Statham in a speedo? Totally cool in my book. I mean, the man is sex on wheels. But I'm not sure he'd be able to pull off the whole "I'm a arrogant and regal wanker" attitude needed to play Namor. Well, that, and the fact that Namor just isn't cool enough to get his own movie. Now, Statham as someone like John Constantine or Captain America (without the accent, obviously)? I'd totally support that kind of plan.

I'd love to see Statham play Midnighter preferably solo, but in an Authority movie if need be. I could have two fantasies at once:

Jason Statham as rough trade. And Jason Statham being the gay lover of some other hottie.

The question now is, who'd play his Apollo?

I could totally see Statham as Namor, if they gave him a proper hairpiece and some voice coaching. I think he's just surly enough for it. On the other hand, a Namor movie would probably suck unless they added the original Human Torch. And gave it a good director. And didn't want to make any money.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"

Comic of the Week

Northstar's Boyfriend Coming In January! You guys may recall I was a bit cranky about Northstar and his lack of lovin' about a year and a half ago. In fact, at the time, I issued a challenge to Marvel to get him a kiss by June 2009 or I would declare him not really gay. I have not forgotten about this. However, when the X-men moved to San Francisco this year, we were teased with the existence of what looked to be Northstar's boyfriend (and manager), so I delayed judgment until we could see more. Since then, Northstar hasn't had a lot of major appearances, as there have been about a thousand major crossover events in the Marvel universe in the last six months, and each one tends to disrupt the normal storyline for most books, including the many X-books. So I waited. Our patience seems to have been rewarded! Artist Tim Fish revealed on his blog that his upcoming story in Nation X #2 (which comes out in Jan.) is a story about Northstar, and will feature Kyle, his boyfriend in an 8-page story. I'm not sure if an actual kiss is in it, but it's implied that there is some lovin' going on. Check out some sketches of Northstar, Kyle, and Aurora below, and we'll keep you up to date when we get closer to Jan. NATION X #2 1/6/10 [TimFishWorks]...
