Northlanders Lands In Comic Book Stores

My first exposure to Brian Wood was with Generation X #63. At the time, he was working with Warren Ellis to bring Generation X back to its former glory (the title having suffered through illogical and horribly written fantasy story lines). They succeeded. And what readers found in issues #63-#75 was the most compelling portrayal of the team since its original creators, Scott Lobdell and Chris Bachalo, left.
I didn’t hear much about Brian Wood until a little indie title called Demo (a superb read, the trade is out in shops now) blew me away with it's intensity. He's also currently writing the critically successful DMZ, a comic about an alternate post 9/11 America that's drowning in civil war. Suffice to say that he has become one my favorite authors with his strong and unique characterizations.
So it brings me great joy to tell you about his latest project, Northlanders, which involves Vikings and debauchery (what else would you expect?). It’s an epic historical fiction about Sven, an exiled Viking prince on a journey to his homeland and his path to self-discovery.

Christian/Islamic conflict. Technological revolution. Fear of the end of the world. Sound familiar? It should. But it's not the world of 2007…it's the world of Europe, circa 1000 AD. The world of Brian Wood's brand-new monthly series, NORTHLANDERS.Following the red-hot success of one of last year's most critically-acclaimed books, DMZ, NORTHLANDERS is a fresh take on Vikings. NORTHLANDERS tells the epic tale of Sven, an exiled Viking prince who's been living the decadent, high life in Constantinople — the 11th century's answer to Las Vegas — but now must return to the desolate lands of his birth in the frigid islands of the North Sea to reclaim his vast inheritance. Intending only to take his money and run, he finds more than he bargained for as his former family and friends are enslaved at the hands of Gorm, his ruthless uncle. What follows is not only a bloody quest to free his people, but also a young man's struggle to discover where he belongs in a rapidly changing world…and what awful sacrifices it will take to make a Prince into a King.
NORTHLANDERS has all the cool, modern sensibilities audiences have come to expect from Wood (DMZ, Demo, Supermarket) mixed with the bloody action of 300 and Gladiator. Joining Wood on this epic journey is outstanding newcomer artist Davide Gianfelice and acclaimed cover artist Massimo Carnevale (Y: THE LAST MAN).
The first issue hit the comic shelves on December 5th and I highly recommend you pick up a copy in preparation for issue #2 coming out on January 2nd.
Expect a full review soon.
