Marvel Unveils New Captain America Design

Look, let's not pretend like we didn't see this coming. Seriously. The death of Captain America seemed like a rip-off of the Death of Superman story arc from the early 1990s, but it seemed... I dunno, a bit more ignoble than how Supes bit the big one back then. Call me crazy, but I would've expected Cap to sacrifice himself so he could save the world... or, y'know, taking down a bunch of Nazis... but having him get shot by a sniper while he's being transported as a prisoner? It just doesn't do the character justice.
But I digress, Marvel comics commissioned Alex Ross to design the "new" Captain America and create a variant cover for Captain America #34, which ships in January. I guess I'd be sort of alright with the black tights and sleeves, but having the guy wielding a gun and... is that a sword on his hip? Oh, come on. That's almost as bad as giving Kal-El a mullet...

The death of Captain America isn't a rip-off. Steve Rogers, Captain America for sixty years, is dead. Period.
True, there will be a new Captain America, but it's not Steve Rogers. As for the gun, since the original Captain America was a soldier, a gun isn't that unusual. Of course, today it could've been a taser.
I'm going to miss Steve Rogers. I still play Captain America during Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
I disagree, Cougar. I think a gun goes against everything Captain America has stood for in his better part of a century of active duty. Captain America is supposed to be a symbol of all that's good and right about our country. He's a defender of the innocent, not a gunman. Captain America isn't just a soldier, he's an icon, a symbol of our ideals as a nation. This is one of the things that Millar didn't understand when he butchered him in Ultimates. I think they're sacrificing several powerful metaphors in the name of making Cap into an "edgy, cool, badass" character. Don't we already have enough Wolverines? In a more and more uncertain world, I think we need a beacon for everything we should stand for even more now than we ever did. While I'm all for my favorite superhero being back, and I'm ALSO all for Steve Rogers staying "Uncle Ben Dead," the gun and knife are a poor, poor choice.
oh look he's shiny now...
A gun on him just seems wrong. I'm with Zukin.
I agree, gun does not suit him.
