Crossover: Sam And Max Hit The Road

samandmaxhittheroad.jpg

As much as I love Sam & Max, I'm not sure that everyone around here is old enough to realize that they first appeared in a graphic novel before they made their way over to the adventure genre of PC gaming. Not only that, but a graphic novel drawn by Steve Purcell, who is like a comic god to me solely because he was the best man at Mike Mignola's wedding. The fact that he has an amazingly smooth art style with some truly skewed/twisted humor is just an added bonus, of course.

Sam & Max Hit The Road is pretty much the triumph of LucasArts' adventure game franchise because it was smart, fun, funny, looked great, and sounded even better. The plot follows our favorite Freelance Police officers as they... oh, hell, there's no way I could coherently summarize the plot for this game unless i had an extra three pages or so. Let's just go with the fact that what seems like a relatively simple case turns into something far more insane and convoluted, but Max eventually gets to commit massive acts of violence and mayhem, and there's a hysterical musical number entitled "King of the Creatures" performed in the last act. Oh, and Bigfoot shows up, too.

Being as old as the game is, it still looks pretty decent when played... in fact, it looks downright dreamy when it's played on a smaller screen (like that of a PDA or something similar in size), and its point-and-click interface is tighter than that of many adventure games which have come along since then. The audio, while a little tinny in comparison to newer titles, is still fun to listen to -particularly the voice acting- and it's hard not to grin at all the clever dialogue that pops up throughout the titular two's adventure.

Sam & Max Hit The Road is one of those timeless classics that manages to contain a lot of entertainment and nostalgic value for those of us who remember playing it as kids. Granted, it might not be as fun for the new generation of gamers as it is for us, but we know we're smarter and prettier than they are, don't we?

I can't wait for Telltale's reprint of Surfin' the Highway.

That $100+ price tag has scared me for years.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
