Crossover: Captain America And The Avengers

I maintain it's one of the great oversights that Captain America and The Avengers hasn't been released for the Wii's Virtual Console. Then again, a lot of my favorite arcade beat 'em up titles from that era have yet to appear on my favorite console, so I can't say I'm terribly surprised by this travesty. It's OK, I'll just work on reliving my lost childhood by watching the first season of Tail Spin on DVD.
Data East's game gave players the option of controlling one of four different major Avengers -Iron Man, Hawkeye, Vision, and the titular Captain America- and follows their adventures as they battle their way across the planet and eventually go up against the Red Skull. Along the way, the Avengers wind up going head to head with such villains as Klaw, The Living Laser, Whirlwind, the Wizard, the Grim Reaper, the Juggernaut, the Mandarin, Controller, Ultron, and Crossbones before taking the World's Creepiest Nazi.
In terms of gameplay, Captain America and The Avengers relied on the formula so popular with other Beat 'Em Up games of the time: players move around the screen -akin to movement in Final Fight, Double Dragon, and Streets of Rage- and smack the hell out of generic enemies (a few hits is usually more than enough to wipe them out) until you manage to reach the level's boss.
Now, don't get me wrong, just because this game doesn't break the mold doesn't mean that it's by any means a badly-made title. Far from it, in fact; but just because a game doesn't distinguish itself with original/groundbreaking gameplay doesn't mean that it isn't fun anyway. Captain America and The Avengers was one of those titles which not only capitalized on the love and nostalgia of comic nerds everywhere, but it also featured some nice tight controls and challenging boss battles. While it hasn't been released for the Virtual Console, one can only hope that it won't be too long before we get to play it again without having to resort to eBay.

This is one of my favorite beat-em 'up arcade games! Well, the arcade version actually. It had really vibrant colors and the background had some sort of "hand-painted" feel to it. And the "WABOOM"s and "SMACK"s create a really memorable ambience. My favorite boss battle was against the Grim Reaper. "You came here to die!"
