Rough Trade Friday: Batman Begins

BD-3683.jpgThere is something just so very right about Christian Bale in tight leather and latex. Not only is Batman Begins an amazing reboot of a failed franchise (FUCK YOU JOEL SCHUMACHER!!!) but it also allows me 140 minutes of yummy Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy to drool over.

The plot centers on Bruce Wayne's transformation into the Batman, from his early wanderings and brawling, to formal training under Ra's al Ghul to become the ultimate warrior. Ultimately Bruce rejects the al Ghuls's extremist views but uses the training to help the faltering city of Gotham. Al Ghul plans an attack on Gotham, partly out of spite towards Bruce and partly out of the city's sins and we get to see the genesis of the great detective at work. Though an action movie, there is considerable depth to the characterizations and there are some truly poignant moments when All Hell Breaks Loose(TM).

What is more interesting to me as a certified/able comic book nerd is the influence of such trades such as Batman: Year One, Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: The Man Who Falls (originally Secret Origins). They are all really good and from very different parts of Batman's life so it is fascinating to see how the source material is woven together on the silver screen.

I have to admit that early encounters with Selina Kyle (the semi-lesbian hooker) are some of my favorite parts of Year One-era batman stories.

I understand that it's not easy to put her in the movie, given previous movies, but it still would've been cool to see.
